Anyone know what tuning
Buddy Miller is using on "Written in Chalk"??

I saw him play it on a danelectro baritone--I'm assuming standard tuning down several steps, either B-B or A-A.

Thanks Jeff! Yea he's been using the Danelectro on this song for awhile. There are two very distinct versions. The earlier acoustic version is the one I'd LOVE to figure out. Easy enough to play the song as the actual chords are utterly simple but as so often is the case as soon as a string or two are tuned down, or up there's a tonality missing when played straight. It's like playing Wilcox or Willy Porter in regular tunning...somethings just kinda wrong! Thanks again |

Do you have a link to that specific version? Wouldn't mind checking it out and seeing if I could think of a logical tuning...

That is Buddy playing a Julius Borges acoustic baritone.
http://www.stewmac.com/How-To/Online...n_an_hour.html The song is in F and the standard chords are pretty easy. Buddy Miller - Written In Chalk F Bb I always pretended for your sake Dm C Bb So you wouldn't know how you make my heart break F Bb I tried so hard to save you from yourself Dm C Bb But I never could cry out loud for help Bb C Dm Bb All I did was help you tell a lie Bb C Dm Bb You never even knew it when I said goodbye Bb C Dm Bb I ran so far and I don't know why If you capo it at 5 you can play it in C shapes and the hammer ons are easy. Sorry I can't get the chords to line up with the words but you get the picture! |
