Default What Wood Is This?

Might take a minute to get the picture loaded but I have a few scraps I picked up a long time ago at my local exotic wood store and have had this piece for 10 years at least. I have a few pieces of BRW from the same source and thought, because of the pre-cut color and weight, that this was a piece of BRW but when I cut it open I found what you see. Is it as simple as Zebra wood? Or something as common? I was quite confused by how it, over time, oxidized to such a dark color.

Anyway I'll attempt a couple of times to get the picture loaded and thanks for the help.

Thank You. Not sure how to get a larger pic posted but perhaps this is better? It also seems to be oxidizing (darkening) rather quickly and that seems the most interesting attribute. It was dark as the photo shows then became rather cool looking after cutting. Checked out Zebra wood but it didn't seem that it turns dark like this piece did/does.

I'm guessing but I'd say Bocote.

Thank You, I happen to have a bit of Black Limba around and it's not that similar. I think it's Bocote.

Zebra wood is almost always quartersawn, which this piece isn’t. But at a glance, that’s what I see.

Zebrano was also my first thought because of the tone. Though the grain looks like Bocote, I've seen a lot of variation in Zebrano. I even have some spalted pieces.

Zebra. On my lathe I make zebra pens. Your wood looks exactly like zebra

didn't realize that wood grows quartersawn...

it's a square chunk of wood and if from one view it has perfectly vertical grain the other view would be flatsawn...

looks riftsawn to me...

I don't think you understood what he was saying. It seemed pretty clear to me and I agree with him. I usually find it quartered, probably because it's appeal is the way it looks when quartered.
