Thar video posted just a bit earlier in this thread really shows what maple can do in the hands of a luthier who knows what to do with it. Every note is clear and not overly bright. As the guy in the video said, that guitar projects. The sound comes out to the listener, rather than rumbling around inside the guitar.

Whenever a discussion comes up in these forums about maple, remember this video as a references. Good choice of tune to play too.

Thank you so much guys.

These comments make me happy ; because since it is my first commissioned guitar, and I'm so excited about it, I know I might not be as objective as someone else, but I think your posts just confirmed what I just hear in this guitar. And most of it is a tribute to Fred's talent.

Hi everyone.

Fred was kind enough to take the guitar out for some pictures...just to make my waiting more unbearable

Fred, is that a maple tree the guitar is leaning on ?

Yes Jean, a 1/2 dead maple the City needs to take down. All of my guitars get their baby pictures leaning on the tree.

When maple is flamed, the closer to perfectly quartersawn, the better the flame shows. When it is quilted the close to dead flatsawn, the better the quilt looks. In a nut shell.

The price increase is three fold: 1, flamed is rarer, 2, flamed is harder to work, 3, market forces.

Edited to say - For some reason I thought this a one page thread, I beg your pardon for any redundancy.

No redundancy Bruce (just a tad late), and your post is informative so I say thank you, and enjoy the pics

J-F-C came to pick up his guitar this morning I took a couple photos and this short video, Jean's 1st tune on the guitar, he plays well and made the guitar sound good. I wish I had a video camera with a separate mic but only used my Sony digital camera with its crummy mic.

Still have my doubts about the last picture and video

But I have no doubt about that guitar; It feels, plays and sound great. And pictures don't do justice to that blonde beauty.

I am very happy and thankful for everything Fred did during this build ; being kind, patient, explicative and providing good recommandations for a newbie like me while building a superb instrument.

The final chapter, meeting him at his home and going down in the workshop was fantastic. I even looked at a nice Sitka top and Bubinga back and sides that could make for a great Tellier Baritone...

Thank you

Jean the video is what it is, your 1st intro to the guitar. I hope sometime you will replace it with a much better and rehearsed tune recorded with a better camera and mic.

It was a real pleasure to have the two of you here yesterday, my wife really liked hearing both of you playing my guitars, said they sound much better when someone else plays them. I seldom agree with her but on that topic she is right. I had one of your beers yesterday and enjoyed it.

It was a pleasure dealing with you over the last 6+ months and your ideas worked out quite well, it seems, sometime one needs to be pushed in different directions and out of their comfort zone. What I learned from the voicing of this guitar adds to my database and will allow me to create similar sounds. I have never voiced a guitar this bright and this voicing with other woods will make a pleasing tone also.

Thanks for an interesting build, I will be looking forward to starting a Baritone for you once your Gibson is sold.

Fred

Thank you for the kind words Fred. Please and say hi to Carol.

My comment on the vid was about my playing, and not about the quality of the vid. It's up to me now to upgrade my playing to that guitar. I'll try to make a decent recording with it and post it.

Thanks for this info. I always wondered about flamed vs quilted maple, since my McPherson is flamed maple. I didn't know what importance the distinction might have. McPherson offers both, but I have only seen one maple McPherson "live", and that is mine. The guitar in this thread seems breathtaking and would be fun to see "live".
