Thanks for the informative responses
Hey everyone I ended up messaging Tommy Emmanuel himself and he told me that there are no rules!
I guess I will just try it all and see where I go, I know Brent Mason is a fast country player that uses a thumb pick and just as Knopfler he says that he uses a peculiar style. Seeing as though all these pro's approve I am just gonna do what works for me and develop my own technique and style! cheers.
