Yes, He Was...
Quote:
The Tribute record that came out a few years back is a wonderful introduction to Jesse's songs and music... "Quiet About It"... some great versions of many wonderful songs by a stellar line-up of players and singers... Sad that so many folks don't even know who Jesse Winchester is/was... I still play songs of his when I perform, and I always let peole know who wrote the tune, and exhort them to buy a few of his records (I'm sure his family can use the $$$)...

I don't know if someone has mentioned this, but you're also going to lose a lot if you're trying to play it on a steel string, not a nylon. I started playing nylon twenty years ago BECAUSE of Jesse, and to my ears (since I mainly perform solo) his songs just don't sound right on steel string. You can get a used Yamaha or Cordoba classical for about 100 bucks. Anyone who plays Jesse's songs should have one. Scott Memmer |

A-men! Anyone who does not know the songs of Jesse Winchester is short-changing themselves of a less rich human experience. I was lucky enough to see him about three times before his passing. I always felt a Jesse show was like a poetry reading, with music added. Yes, the tribute album was/is terrific. I've since begun playing "I Wave Bye-Bye" onstage because of Toussaint's cover on there. Southern Gentleman, indeed. I hope I'm not repeating myself, but one reviewer made a very wise observation after Jesse's passing: He said he was in the direct lineage of Stephen Foster; and I thought, well, that just about nails it. So many great songs, but especially "Little Glass of Wine," "If Only," and so many other wonderful songs. Did you know Don Henley cover "Brand New Tennessee Waltz" on his most recent album? anyway, thanks! scott |
