I think it's important to note that there are different types of students, or different types of minds if you would, with varied learning curves and different levels of drive. One student may need his/her hand held for years trying to grasp the basic fundamentals while another student may take a couple of lessons and blossom beyond belief because of natural ability and the yearning to learn.
The students that need approval at every step will not necessarily do well with self instuction but others are able to pick up a book and take what they need at the time they need it then refering to the book down the road for information as needed.
As a personal note, I found I was much better off learning on my own than taking lessons so I understand the difference. Maybe it's my ADD.
