Too many videos are doctored to include some reverb to make the guitar sound better.
The only sound sample that I'm interested in is the one that's comes from when I play the guitar. If I see a guitar that interests me, I'll investigate the spec's long before I care about the sound.

Yes, it's helpful but obviously just one of many things to consider.

EBay advises that the more BS you include on the post the better chance you have of selling the item. Sound clips are added BS after all is said and done.

A good sound clip helps. While it wouldn't ever be the only determining factor, it can convey many things about the guitar.

I bought a guitar from the USA based on this YouTube demo clip.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=n6pLqcsB8ek I was not disappointed.

For your typical Martin or Taylor, not really. Most people have a pretty good idea of what those models sound like.

I have never heard a soundclip that influenced my buying of a guitar, but I have heard some that made me not even consider that guitar. Make it sound good.

I buy my guitars based on sound clips. I find it's easier than traveling to guitar shops. The trick is to have a good sound system on your computer. I have Audioengine A5+ speakers and a good DAC. The setup costs about $600 but it's not only good for listening to audio clips it's good for listening to music too on Spotify so it's well worth it.
Based on sound clips I bought a 2010 D-16 Adirondack and a 2016 Taylor 818e and they are for the money the best guitars I've ever had. I've played hundreds of mid to high range guitars and these guitars are the cream of the crop. I payed less than 5K for both of them and bought them after listening to thousands of sound clips. |

I agree with this. At least you can get a general idea of what voice a guitar has. One guy did a pretty decent video of the Eastman E10 00 SS I now own. It at least gave me a general idea. I bought one from LA Guitars on line and I'd have to say the recording did it justice. As I have previously said, I wouldn't buy a $2000 or more priced guitar unplayed.
