Doug, your last line made me laugh a bit because it's so true. Simple, but it works great.

Possibly, I thought it was grey. I know there were a few versions, and Teddy has a couple of different ones. But that's a good example of the type of circuit! Simple signal path, no complications... Textbook FET with a few resistors, one gain stage, no integrated circuits.

I probably should have mentioned that Teddy said something about having the pickups be LESS hot than they were originally... I don't know how he accomplished this, but that's what prompted the question about "needing" a preamp... I know that a good preamp can do a lot of shaping to tone, and I'm not questioning that, at all...
I can use my K&K-equipped Goodall without one, either into the AER or my Bose T1, but I don't know that I would, as I have had the same experience that Doug Young mentioned; I haven't found a really good sound with that pickup without using a separate preamp unit.

Doug, I read on another thread that you use an Audix L5O with the Dazzo pickup. How do you have it wired? Is it possible to wire the Mic to a single jack with the Dazzo and use a TRS cable like you can with the D-TAR Wavelength?

Sure, I just wire the mic to the ring, and use a preamp that supplies power to the ring via a TRS cable. Same as the K&K pickup+mic setup. You need a "stereo" TRS jack, which I think Teddy supplies by default.
