Default Goodnight Irene - instrumental

Hi folks:

I always liked this simple old song. My dad used to sing it a lot. I never paid attention to the lyrics, other than the chorus, so I didn't know until recently that its actually a very sad song. My father has been gone for a few years, and thinking about him made it easy for me to try to add more feeling to my playing. I hope it comes through.

The guitar is my brand new Alvarez MPA66. Thank you for listening and I always appreciate any comments.

I remember that tune... that's wonderful, Larry. I haven't heard that in an eternity. Bet that brings back some memories for you. I like that little Alvarez. Thanks for sharing.

Thanks so much Kerbie! Yes, this is a very old song. According to Wikipedia, it was first recorded in 1933 by Lead Belly, although he was playing versions of it as early as 1908. And his version may have evolved from a similar song by Gussie L. Davis in 1892! The Weavers, of course, made it very popular (a number one hit) in 1950.

I'm enjoying the Alvarez more and more everyday. It's got a sweet, simple and clear sound to it and is really comfortable. I'm keeping it!
