Default Out on the fringe...

...of the known catalog of guitar music is some really, and I mean really, good stuff. I was taking a nap after work yesterday and as usual put on a live video to sleep to. This time it was Camel's Total Pressure, a repackage of their concert at the Hammersmith Odeon in 1984. The dogs woke me up in time to catch the finale, "Long Goodbyes," and I thank them for that. Here it is from the earlier concert package, Pressure Points Live:

The intro features Andrew Latimer on 12 string Ovation playing along in amazing synchronization with the synth and the solos were solos he wrote for the song and played on a '70s Norlin Les Paul. Never let it be said nothing beautiful has been played on those guitars. Wikipedia has info on the concert and a personnel listing HERE. The band was an all-star bunch, one of whom (Chris Rainbow (Harley)) was a member of the Alan Parsons Project and the Abbey Road Rhythm Section. For those into trivia, the encores featured guest appearances by former Camel members Peter Bardens and Mel Collins. Mel is possibly the most recorded saxophonist in the U.K. with a credit list a mile long.

Agreed. I don't think there's another guitar on the planet that can do exactly that. What a gorgeous, gorgeous sound.

Inspired by this song I went into to the guitar room this morning, pulled out my Norlin LP, and played these leads. I just enjoyed having the lovely music flowing over me, even if it was by my own hands.
