Default tailpiece for 50's Gibsons.....

One of my clients husbands has a late 50's Gibson - appears to be an ES-225t from what I can tell. He says the tailpiece is broken. I see originals on Ebay for 200 plus. Does anyone know if there is an "aftermarket" seller of these?

Thanks

how many husbands?

i have a 55 es225 that has the original tailpiece, however, i have very easily replaced it with a 125-type rosewood bridge. the reason i say that is that those compensated tailpieces were terribly difficult to intonate so almost everyone swapped it for the rosewood.

the main reason it cost so much is that the early les paul used it also. so that is why the price is so high.

in the picture i can't tell where it is actually broken. he may want to take it to a machinist to see if they can rework it. probably would cost less than buying one on ebay.

hope this helps.

Haha - only one.

I haven't seen the guitar in person yet either, and had considered that as an option too - lots of good machine shops in the area. He's wanting to ready it for selling, so keeping it original (and not repaired) may be the best option.

later on, they came with the rosewood bridge, so he may have to lower his price if he doesn't fix the tailpiece, or, put a different bridge on it so that at least it is playable. the rosewood bridge sits on top so that there is no change to the guitar as far as drilling/routing etc.

the 225 was quite different in that it had the cutaway and the pickup situated in the middle. the 225 was a step up from the 125t.

they only made these from 55-59. mine is a first year guitar and plays great but is not in collector shape.
