Can you buy a good acoustic for $200?
Just curious as to what your experience has been. I've been impressed with what Yamaha can do for $200. Are there others out there? Alvarez?

Love my AP66SB parlor ($199 on sale). I had a AD60 too... It needed a set up which I did myself...maybe some new grover tuners down the road. But it sounded and played great. (I sold it to fund my Alvarez MD60 Masterworks Dread) .. |

Maybe not for $200, but for around $250 it is possible to find brand new Alvarez or Ibanez acoustic guitars very well made, with solid tops and a good sound.

I think you can still get Yamaha FG-700 for $200.
There's a few other solid top guitars out there that I can't remember. Others will chime in on those. |

FS700s
The Yamaha in my signature was purchased (a gift) during a President's Day sale in February of 2015 for $179. It is solid spruce over laminate sapele. Sounds pretty good for that price!

Good = something you can take on road trips or play at the beach without worrying about messing up a $2,000 guitar.
IN other words, a "disposable" guitar that doesn't hurt your ears. |

I essentially bought my Gibson AJ for under $200, but there's a back story to that. So yes, you can get a great guitar for $200.

Under $200 is where (sadly) I've been living. For that price I'd recommend, as others said, a Yamaha FG?FS800 or an Alvarez if you can get them for sale. However, you can get right now a Yamaha AD30 for that price. It's cosmetically a no-frills model but it does have a bone nut and saddle while the Yamaha has a urea nut and saddle.
Or you should be able to get one of the discontinued Yamaha FG/FD 700 series for a good discount, just ask and point out the models are discontinued and you expect a fire sale soon. I'd still get the 800 series because of the scalloped bracing. Sometimes you can get Alvarez models for great sale prices. I got my AJ80 jumbo for half off the street price. It was either that of the AD66 model and I wish I had gotten that one too. I'm not mentioning used models unless you can get one yourself and check it out; if not, I'd advise buying one from a person or site with a liberal return policy.

I would recommend the recording king RP-06 though it would have to be used. And hurting your ears could vary widely to each person.

If you strum the Yamaha is OK, but if you play finger style, I would not recommend them because not only they have a very narrow string spacing at the nut, they also have the narrowest string spacing at the bridge.

That's a good deal. However, I don't know if the OP has a size or wood preference.
