Default Anyone here play a cajon?

Since they do have strings for the snare, I thought this topic might belong here. Went to a bluegrass jam Saturday, and in addition to the usual Martin dreads, banjo, fiddle, mandolin, and upright bass, there was a fellow playing a cajon for the percussion. Really sounded great with the rest of the acoustic instruments. It's the first time I have seen somebody play one of these close-up, and I wondered, are there any guitar players here with no drum expertise who have tried to play one of these?

I have. It's fun and I'm no drummer. You can get a cajon for as little as 100 bucks from GC. Try it and see if you like it

We have one at church. I love it. Our drummer hates it because it "inhibits his artistic freedom". Which is why we have a cajon at church.

They're easy to play but a real drummer will always sound better on one than a non drummer. Don't let that stop you, though.

Yes. Once you get used to where to hit for the sound you want they sound pretty good. i've yet to record with it but I will.

If you can play the steering wheel you can probably play a Cajon.

Check out Kevin Ricard's YT videos on cajon. He plays on in the house band on american idol and Tonite show

I have one...tons of fun.

If you're bored and check out "Just Don't Know" on the music section of my website below, the percussion is a cajon and a crash/ride cymbal. It ain't perfect, but it's pretty remarkable what sounds you can get with a pretty simple setup.

I bought one of the kits you put together for $49 at GC. It actually sound pretty good. You do need some good long clamps to hold it together when you glue it up. Lots of fun...

got my younger daughter one last Christmas and she really digs it. It was around $100 and is actually pretty nice and solid-the sides are different so a different tone comes from each(i think one side is even braced).

its really pretty interesting..............and makes for a quick seat anytime

there's a real popular youtube group that does a lot of covers(and very well), and they always usually have a guy using one-i cannot remember that bands name right off-i'll try to remember and post back

here you go, fellow forumites helped out:
check out Boyce Avenue on youtube

I found a special on a "Tycoon" Supremo at Amazon for $60, so I decided to give it a try. If I can't play it, it would make a decent end table

I play one and have built a few. Our drummer plays one because a full drum kit would over power our acoustic band. The big plus is how easy it is to travel with as apposed to a drum kit.

I bought one last year from a guy who makes them local. Nice look, nice sounds, and very fun to play. $100. I bet if a person asked around, they could find someone making them in their community.

I play one in my band. We're acoustic so it's more appropriate than a full kit. It's still pretty versatile and the sound can be changed thru tuning and brushes and stuffing the drum (like a bass drum). GC doesn't have any really good ones, though. I bought mine there and I do really like it, but the sound separation is a little wanting. I have the LP Mario Cortes.
Schlagwerk makes excellent cajons and also makes accessories for them as well.
