Default Flamenco Links

I thought I'd start a new thread for Flamenco links (actually, I think there should be a separate forum from Classical, since the arts are so different.)

These days, there are plenty of links to Flamenco on YouTube, both excellent and underwhelming (to say the least). Nevertheless, everyone has their own idea of what they like, and it is probably a good idea to share them.

Here is a basic start from a recent search:

Bulerias
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wOlPjol8EkE (Farruquito)
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fe8-P3Weiuc (Paco de Lucia)
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FzIC1oMl1nY (Beni de Cadiz, Manol Brenes)

(Manolo Brenes - one of the best accompanists in the business.. IMO)

Tangos
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OeqZz3KVXKo (La Tati)
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QLMgJ_8TyYU - Tangos (from Andalusian Journey)

These are great films for background -

Thanks so much, Chuck!

I'm dedicating the next year to learning some basic flamenco technique and these links will certainly be helpful. I've always been fascinated by the "puro" flamenco guitarists - intense, powerful, incredible sense of timing and rhythm.

BTW...check out Chuck's website if you'd like to learn about Flamenco.

I'm here, not there. At least this morning...

FWIW I just sprung for a 2017 Cordoba GK Pro. The good news is that the electronics faithfully represent the guitar (at least at low volumes), and the sound of the guitar is not bad - well worth the investment.

The Cordoba Studios are worth the investment as well - and they even have tuners... why Fishman left the tuner off the Pro's Prefix Pro Blend is beyond me.... I also leave the Blend all the way OFF - I don't WANT a "mic'd" sound, it adds too much artificial bass, as well as feeding back at all the wrong times.....

That said, it does sound like somebody went to China and specified the guitar as "bright, light, fast action"), so what resulted was a Chinese idea of what that means (translated into Chinese). The guitar does have those qualities, but there is a world of difference between that and my Sanchis Blanca and Negra guitars (I had Takamine CTP-2 and Palathetic pickups installed in both of them). Also my Takamine Flamenco TC-132SC - made special for me via Mike Markure when he (and Takamine) were at Kaman Music with, cypress sides and spruce top, which sounds great plugged-in, but is built like a tank, so it is difficult to get up with it and do my Gypsy two-step at the fin de fiesta ....

And all of them sound even better with a little growl from my Boss OD-1X ....

PS, sounds almost as good with my Behringer TO800 ($20)

Chuck....thanks for your take on the new GK Pro - I'm assuming you have the cypress? I currently have a nice 2013 Hippner Barbero blanca and I'm going add one more flamenco to my line up. I was taking a look at the GK Pro, but I'm concerned about the narrower nut width. I've grown accustomed to 52mm.

IMO, the slightly narrower width takes a bit of getting used to, but not much. I think the GK Pro (I have the Blanca cypress) is closer than the GK Studio to tradition in that respect. The Studio (Blanca and Negra) is a little more of a crossover, but I think a good value in its price range. Whether it is Blanca or Negra doesn't make much difference plugged in (I'm not sure there is that much difference between the Pro and the Studio for that matter....)

I own the GK Pro Negra (rosewood sides and back) It's definitely not a flamenco guitar.

FYI. The studio model have laminated sides and back. The pro version have solid wood sides and back. I prefer the fishman system in the pro over the studios version.

The GK Pro Negra meets all of my needs for playing a wide variety of music ( pop, jazz, classical)

Here are some links of Puro Flamenco (I've had DVD's of these, but just discovered them on YouTube:

Yes, thank you for the links. I just got a 2004 Luis Sevillano flamenco guitar and I am trying to learn some things as well.

Here's the guitar sound I'm trying to improve on with the Helix/LT/FX;

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ymeGKkSTwxk (El Perla y Rubio de Pruna)
(It is slow going....

If the link doesn't work, search YouTube for "Perla y Rubio de Pruna - juerga por Buleria 2017"

(Great example of great guitar accompaniment by Perla and the all-important palmas (handclapping), although the singer (El Rubio de Pruna) is not singing much in copla form (structure is similar to a limerick), but cuples (e.g., some with Fandangos chord progressions).... still very good with excellent compas. But notice the guy at 11:37 wearing the BOSS t-shirt...
