Snakewood is several times the price and much more difficult to source.

...than ebony, sure, but how about dragonwood? I suppose it would have been professionally questionable practice to tell them you'd sourced dragonwood for this particular build, but now that I've seen it I can't unsee the dragon's breath climbing up the fingerboard. It really is spectacular work, and it's spectacular how much work you manage to get done, Bruce, thanks for sharing!

There's a very good Luthier on Luthier podcast interview with Ken Parker in which he discusses the influence of classical string instrument construction on his approach to his guitars. It's one of the most interesting (and different) among the many interesting episodes of that podcast.

I received several Ebony violin fingerboards yesterday, ready made and of great quality for about $12 apiece. The Snakewood one took me about 2 1/2 hours to make, and the chunk of raw wood, part of a log I bought years ago, I estimate to have cost me $20. Legless Dragonwood, indeed! It is harder than most, if not all, ebony.

I completed V8, the fiddle I made a month ago, and have been playing it daily. Despite my trepidations, it is the best I've done so far. If the next one, V9 currently under construction, is better I won't have to deliver V8 to the customer, and I will avoid a broken heart.
I made a page for V8 linked to this photo: |
