Default A bad case of the wants?

I call it a case of the wants, my wife calls it the fever. Do you browse through marketplace, CL, Reverb, all the places selling guitars and get a bad case of the wants? Do you then move heaven and earth to get your hands on it?

I have to admit, when I was younger I would get a bad case of the wants, not guitars, but motorcycles, golf clubs, cameras and such. All stuff for my leisure activities. But in my old age I don't have that urge anymore. I still look at guitars and banjos all the time, I just don't have to have them like that. Just something else to talk about. I see a lot of people with the wants here is all.

I'm with you. I just want to dump most of my unnecessary stuff in life and move on. Being emotionally attached to a guitar has never been my thing.

These days “The wants” is tempered by “ The lucky to have what I haves” and the needs.
Don’t need much.

If I were to find a Webber OM “The Wants” might overpower the needs

A lot of Internet forums are largely populated by shop-aholics and their enablers. Of course people can spend their money on anything they wish, but for many it seems that possessions are just a rotating showroom of their fickle tastes and the fleeting satisfaction they get from believing that happiness comes from without.

yep, all the time. I wanted a vintage archtop, bought a Gretsch that I loved at the store. I wanted a vintage Gibson archtop, ordered one on Reverb. I wanted a D-18, reverb. And the list goes on. The ones I tend to keep around are the 300-400 "beaters" that are too cheap to sell. I ironically end up bonding with those more and have a hard time selling them, where as an almost mint 00-18 was out the door pretty fast. It was just too nice to keep out all the time.

Anyways, yes, I have the wants, the fever, the GAS, whatever you want to call it.

All the time. Seems like each week I hyper focus on something else… the other week it was a Taylor, then a J45, then a Yamaha FG5, then an Archtop, then some sort of vintage Harmony guitar, then a Terz guitar, then a Telecaster.

It’s rare that I actually act on anything, but I spend so much time researching and trying to figure out what I need to do in order to get what I’m after that it’s exhausting. I finally sold my 2013 000-18 yesterday, after much debate, as it is played the least and it felt great to actually thin the heard and enjoy what I have without gunning for something else. Then, literally 12 hours later, I found a rare Yamaha on Reverb that I couldn’t pass up and bought it lol.

I’m convinced that I’ll never have a guitar that I’ll want to keep forever, maybe I just get bored too easily or maybe I browse this forum too much

Not with guitars; they are unoffensive and not so expensive that I need to "move heaven and earth to get your hands on it". If there's a guitar that I want, I just buy it.

There are always guitars that I want. I could have 50 guitars and still want more. I've just learned to live with it.

I used to think those women who closets full of $10k purses had lost their minds. Now, while I don’t care about purses, I do get the want to keep getting new stuff for your collection.

I go through cycles of it... guitars, mandolins, banjos, watches, fly fishing gear.

I generally recognize it for what it is, but frequently give into it anyway.

Guitars, in some cases yes, especially if it's a make/model I used to own. Gear? I mostly wonder how heavy is that thing?

At 67 my musical wants seem to have more to do with maintenance of what little skill I have and trying to learn some new things along the way. Yes, I do have 12 guitars...what's your point?

I remain super interested in certain types of guitars (e.g. slope shoulder dreads of various makes, Japanese guitars from the 60s and 70s, newer high end Yamahas and Yairis), but over the last year, I have just stopped pulling the trigger on new guitars. Part of it may be that I just can't see myself getting rid of any of the guitars I own now, and at my age, I just don't want to accumulate any more STUFF!
