Default Acoustic Brain Damage

A great song by a great writer. This was emailed to me by one of my record collecting buddies from California. I did find Mr Waters' choice of instruments very interesting. I just thought I'd share.

I agree interesting choice of instruments, especially since Waters has been anti commercialism in the past. Don't get me wrong, I own an EC, and love it, but it seems an unusual choice for him. Maybe I'm overthinking it.

Eh, big pink Floyd fan. That song doesn't have the same power when played solo acoustic though. Doesn't do nothing for me.

Thanks for sharing this, I loved it. I'm also a long time, big time Pink Floyd fan and despite the end of Floyd, I am loving the new discoveries of original and raw acoustic demos, re-imaginings and other things that emerge from the songwriters, performers and the vaults. Earlier today in Sirius I heard a similar rendition of Money, which was a demo - same approach, Waters and his acoustic guitar only. Loved it, but doesn't
sound like some here might like it, and certainly not Top 40 or what was AOR radio (which is essentially Sirius now). Sure, these skeleton simplified versions aren't going to find new audiences (or as we see above, old audiences), but for me, it's great new way to listen and really understand where the final piece came from. Also, it maps better into where I am, almost totally acoustic. Since I am looking for ways to play many of my old electric favorites, I am loving this stuff. I hope we see more from Gilmore and the Vault:-) Waters is like a non-stop fountain of this stuff.

I found this video about 2 years ago and have posted it a few times. I've used it to learn how to play the song just like he does...love it. "The lunatic is on the grass...." I think it sounds great on acoustic, especially my D-35. It sounds pretty cool on a 12 string too. Here's a short sound sample of it....

I saw this a couple of months ago and settled on playing the verse fingerstyle and switching to a pick for the verse. I'm a huge PF fan and I get a better feel from the song like this.

Yeah that makes sense to me. There should be sort of a buildup in this song, and this all fingerstyle version is lacking that. In fact that buildup is a huge part of the original recording imo

Thanks for sharing. I definitely like to hear different records, particularly acoustic recordings of iconic songs.

98% of the time, I'll prefer a stripped down acoustic arrangement. However, with Pink Floyd, I have a preference to their studio recording. The arrangement and production is perfect. There's a certain texture and mood that can't translate over into a single guitar.

It's still great to hear. A good song stripped down to just an acoustic guitar and vocals has no where to hide. If it's still good in that environment, it's still a wonderful song.

I think you have captured it perfectly, no where to hide, and if it survives it's a wonderful song. And these do survive .... just like that stark Money demo Waters did back in 19-seventy-something. Not the clean studio masterpiece that they masterfully recreate even on stage today, but the song is there fully in tact, like an infant that hasn't begun to mature -- all the ingredients are there, just needs to be cooked to perfection and spiced up a bit, to taste.

Like many have already said, it's great to use as a guide when learning the song. I don't know how to play it but I'll probably use this video to help. I love stripped down acoustic versions of songs like this. A great song can stand on its own without the pyrotechnics of a large band. This one manages well I think.

I was pleasantly surprised to see Roger choose an Eric Clapton Signature 000-28 for this song given the general distain for signature models I see on this forum. I never considered it as I chose this guitar because it sounds and plays perfect (for me). I don't give it the same justice as Roger does though.

Thank You. Fantastic!!!!

I wonder if that is not a studio guitar? One of a few to choose from?

I liked your version of this song as well. It's not as intimate as Roger's finger style but it fills the other voices with the full-bodied sound of a 12 string lightly strummed. It's like listening to a band with only one instrument. Very nice! Thank you for sharing.
