Wechter 000s on eBay
Wechter Guitars stopped production this summer, but seem to have been producing some exceptional guitars at great prices, backed by quite positive reviews by Acoustic Guitar Magazine and elsewhere, including their 12-fret 000 Martin-inspired all solid spruce/mahogany (TO-8418) and spruce/rosewood (TO-8428) slotheads. I picked up a very lightly used TO-8418 for my office and just bought a second on eBay for my cottage. Apparently I'm not alone in this discovery. Recently, prices for used Wechter 000s have been steadily climbing. During the summer, Sweetwater was blowing out NEW Wechter 000s for under $400 (street pricing had been just under $700) and over the past two months, online prices for USED 000s have gone up from the mid-$300s to $600 or more. Tonight a used TO-8418 with noted bumps, bruises and a less-than-ideal looking case sold for $600 amidst heated bidding.
I'd be interested in hearing from anyone with knowledge (as opposed to speculation) of why Wechter went out of business. Are there other examples of guitars that were not fully appreciated until they were gone? Any others out there who are stockpiling Wechter 000s?

T0-8418
Not stockpiling, but I bought one new about a year and a half ago. Hardly ever play it and was considering selling it a month ago, but decided the prices they were getting weren't enough to sell it.
Nice to know it was right to hold off. Thanks for the update. Sorry I can't add any information to answer your questions. Just assumed they went bankrupt. |

Abe had a fasinating life in the guitar making business. Its sad he couldn't keep the domestic production of his guitars going in Michigan and then Indiana. I acquired by fluke on ebay one of the very vew domestic hybrids he made, it an absolutely beautiful and well made guitar. He was very kind to always answer emails when I had questions about it. I think he said 7 were produced. He exhibited up at the Sweetwater weekend fest two years ago and I took the back plate of that guitar and had him sign it. Very nice guy, just think the world of a small manufacturer is not an easy one nowdays. Also he would have to be getting up to a retirement age as well. Wish him all the best.
Steve PS, I loved his Nashville tuned guitars, they were delightful.
