I don't have an Epiphone, but I do have a Gibson ES-345... after years of attempting to "get used to" 9's or 10's, I have finally settled on 11's... and I really like them! Tone seems to be a bit fatter, across the board, and the difference between the 12's I use on my acoustic guitars and the 11's on the Gibson doesn't seem like such a huge gap/difference in playability...
As far as brand of strings? I used D'addario xl110's for decades... now I use Elixir Nanoweb electric strings, 11's w/ a plain (unwound) G string... they last and sound good for a really long time!

thomastik power brights
EDIT you could also like thomastik jazz bebop supposedly jazz bebop are for hollow and semi hollow guitars and power brights are for solid body guitars...dont let that fool you they both work great on any style guitar and any kind of music and playing they are not cheap but they last a long time Last edited by Paikon; 10-07-2012 at 10:52 AM. |

I like GHS Boomers (10.5 - 50, Gilmour Red) on my Gibson 335. Great tone and playability for me.

Choose your gauge, but I like nickel-plated steel (as opposed to pure nickel) on an Es-335 type. They have a certain top-end sparkle. Gibson sends out its ES-335s with Gibson Brite wires, which are nickel plated steel, so that's how I learned about that. Fender makes their 250 nickel-plated steel which is a little cheaper than the Gibson Brite Wires and sounds very similar.

I have the Epi by Gibson ES335, Japan Market, which is very similar to yours. I use mine mainly for alternative electric tunings such as DADGBD [Neil Young], open G and Open D. As a converted acoustic player with a fairly heavy touch, I find I like heavier strings and for this one I use GHS Regular Brite Flats 12-54.

I don't have an Epiphone, but I do have a Gibson CS-336. I love the way that nickel strings sound on it. I alternate between Pyramid pure nickel, Thomastik-Infeld Blues Sliders, and GHS Big Core Nickel Rockers, all of them sound delicious in a semi-hollow with humbuckers.
