So many great electric guitarists:

in no particular order and I'll add a quick reason why just for fun.

Buddy Miller: always plays what is needed, nothing more or less.
Kenny Greenberg: great emotion in his rock playing
Mark Knopfler: proof that tone is in the fingers
Dave Gilmour: emotion!
Brian May: killer lead licks, killer tone
John Mayer: great modern blues and pop licks
Larry Carlton: "Emotions Wound Us So" - amazing feedback control and Dumble tone.

so many more too!

There have been a lot of good ones listed. Checked out these two lesser known masters of the electric.

Rocky Athas

Andy Latimer

Iron Maiden's Adrian Smith and Dave Murray made me pick up the guitar back in the '80s. Great harmony solos. I'm also a big fan of Randy Rhodes (Ozzy in the early '80s). I listed to the Tribute CD again just last week and he does some amazing live work on it.

I'm a sucker for harmonized lead guitar. Too bad it's so rare, especially these days.

It is special, ain't it? Maiden is amazing with their harmony solos, very melodic. And both Adrian and Dave are amazing on their own too.

Another great, Wayne Johnson, with the most amazing band. I've seen him a couple times at the Comeback Inn when I lived in LA in the '80s.

This may not help my cool bona fides, but man I think John Mayer is a great electric player. He can tend to use a few too many notes at times but the guy combines great technical skill with a knack for melody in almost everything he plays. And he can do it across a variety of styles, I've heard him play great blues (of course), pop, and even occasional jazz.
