Just loved the reverb and chorus around the 10 minute mark. Sounded a lot like the sound James Taylor has.

I am after playing with this thing with only 1 exception , getting more and more impressed . The 1 exception you ask ? Effect Slot #1 is unchangeable . It is set specifically for Modeling , and cannot be changed . So in truth , if you dont use the Modeling, you only get 2 effect slots to use . But 3 band EQ on the Top , not buried in a Menu , and Blender Mic/Pickup XLR out , 20 user presets ( NO factory presets thank god _+++++) The noise floor is unbelievable .........There is any . Mic pre is really quiet , Could be a Tad Hotter , but with it cranked all the way up there was no noise with a Mic that has almost 20 db of self noise So Impedance is matched really well . But I hope that in future updates they Make Slot 1 more available . It must be a processor conservation tactic , because in the manual it even speaks of some of the effects as being so processor intensive that if used with another effect they wont work . But overall , I am very happy with its design . I can understand the limitations. |

Is the mic input for vocals or for the guitar? As for the effects I'm really starting to think that I may have to get a G3 for additional effects and for the ability to turn them on/off. I'm not hip on the build three patches and then cycle through them with the one footswitch. In my setup I usually have just one overal tone and then turn the individual effects on/off when needed. Still trying to think through this device. Like the sounds that you got on the video.

Effect slot 1 is reserved for Modeling only , s it cannot be changed . Meaning : If you do not use the Modeling , then you only get 2 effect slots. There are 20 slots to store the effect setups , but you have to scroll sequentially thru them , no Up /Down foot switch ability . I messed with it for about 4 hours yesterday . Ended up with this one setup that was a pretty amazing sound Effect slot 2 U87 mic emulator , - (Mic inserted between 2/3) - Effect slot 3 , the Optical compressor .->> Stereo out to Alesis Nanoverb 2 for the reverb . But there are the limitations .......If you want to use the EQ's or Compressors or anythings else then you only get the 2 effects to really play with . The Mic pre is Very quiet . I did get some Ground Buzz when I had the Nanoverb 2 in the chain , but I pulled off a sock and put my toe on the Guitar cable end at the A3 input ....... Noise gone . But Live ........Simple setup , no real pyrotechnics to this unit . Yes you would need other gear before or after to get the real benefit |

Are there any settings for the guitar modeling that couldn't also be accomplished with alternative effects (eq, etc.)?

Zoom Sees the Limits
I have had the A3 for a little while now , and have seen the limitations of the Effect Slot system
As in Slot 1 is reserved and cannot be manipulated from its Structure Slot 2 and 3 you can use what you want but , again With Acoustic that is mostly Dynamics , Compression EQ etc , leaving no room for the Awesom Verbs that are in it . So Namm Show 2013 , What does Zoom announce ? This Just Reverbs Chorus and Delays , a STEREO pedal , dedicated to just that purpose . The Zoom A3 has Stereo outs . So , the A3 as input , and Tone etc . Then the Reverbs Delays etc in this pedal giving me On and Off capability Plus having a Dry feed out of the XLR on the back or the A3 3 Outs to the Board ...... With just the right blend of effects . I am waiting for this pedal . |

Zoom A3 as a Recording Preamp
I am an Audio Engineer ,
I have some very nice preamps , I have some very nice mics, I have experience behind some very nice , and very LARGE mixing boards. I have Seen so many mic pre's it isnt funny, on the Budget , on the Dole In the Milk and Honey , and in the Bowl . I just spent an hour and a half , with the Zoom A3 connected to my Zoom R16 I wanted to see what it could do for the R16's woeful inputs . Setup : Audio Technica AT-3035 ( Japan Made-I have a Matched Pair) XLR Output from the A3 to XLR input 1 of the R16 .Mic Cable Input 1 Gain knob set to Line Level ( All the way Left) Send Return effects OFF Insert effects OFF Only effects were from the A3 Effect slot 1: OFF Effect Slot 2: Mic 87 Effect Slot 3: Opt Compressor Drive @ 6 , Level 80 , tone 1/4 (Dark) Main EQ ( 3 knobs on top of A3) Bass 2 o'clock Mid 11 O'clock Treble 12 Master output of the A3 at half or so . Lets just say I am kinda Impressed ....... No Noise . Big Punchy sound Strumming with a Pick @ 1 meter distance from the mic , Meters easily hit -6 db Small portable recording just changed . It makes a Very nice small mic pre with a lot of tricks up its sleeve . Oh by the way My Mic preamps TL Audio 5051 Focusrite Twintrack Pro ARX 8 Pre ( First Version) and a couple I have built ( 1 of which is on my Youtube Channel ) So When I say , this is a nice small Mic pre , I can speak with a little assertion. Is it my TL Audio or my Focusrite ...... no But It is quiet , Clean , and a bit of a Chameleon And will do WONDERS for the sound of Portable Recorders, and USB Interfaces that have less than stellar inputs ( That is a long list) I will enjoy this pedal quite a bit . The XLR output is really hot , Which means you can turn down the crappy inputs on anything you have it connected to . Just as a Mic pre . With Various Types of EQ built in , as well as Compressors but Optical and other wise . A person with even a modicum of knowledge of how to use a Compressor will have a lot of fun with this in a Home studio . |

Thanks, Great idea to try it out as a mic pre. I might still consider getting an A3 to use in that capacity for my R24.
The pres in the R24 (same as R16) are OK as long as you don't need to push the gains much. They are useable for all my phantom stuff, but not so good on dynamics. This would give me another option. Appreciate all your hard work! |

I really like the pedal even with its shortcomings . The New Chorus /Delay /Reverb pedal they just announced at Namm will do he trick on that . and leave the Compressors and EQs for the A3 |
