Just gotta say, I know there's a lot of GC love here, but a good retailer would not have let you leave the store with a cracked top on a new guitar. Even if the customer misses something like this the sales associated should care. it's a significant purchase. Worth it these days to learn how to do your own setups and buy on-line.

Here's the link to the thread with the pictures of it prior to the crack. That crack appeared overnight.

Initial new guitar thread

But all is well that ends well. I got a replacement for it yesterday.

Bummer...but glad you had no trouble quickly finding another sweet J-45. Kinda flys in the face of those folks that insist Bozeman is cranking out a lot of inconsistent "duds."

To my ears, there are a whole lotta great 45s out there...glad one of them is mine.

Oh, missed that part. Glad they had another and it sounds like you're enjoying the new one better.

Hey Barry.

Glad you got it early. I have no doubt that just a day is not enough to crack a guitar even if you live in bone dry desert regions. It takes weeks. Congrats on the beauty. I think when you through a fresh pair of strings you will get the sound you want.

Thanks Orfeas!

As someone stated earlier, the humidification of the guitar probably caused the crack to show itself. I'm going with that otherwise my wife and I are losing it,

Slide your guitar such that is goes roundy end first off the couch. Mines about...oh, maybe 18 inches off the floor. When I moved my 000-16 so dearest girl cat could get to her official spot on the sofa, I did exactly that, and caused exactly that crack in the picture, just lower down the lower(treble) bout. So just a day? No, just a second is all it takes to get exactly that kind of crack.

If you get a chance try the John Pearse Phosphor Bronze on it or even the 80/20's. I tried the D'Addario Nickel Bronze on my 2016 J-45 Standard and I couldn't get them off the guitar fast enough. It robbed the guitar of its low end and made it sound thin. A switch to the Pearse PB's and it came back to life instantly.

You'd be surprised. Things happen, and things slip through the cracks. If a retailer has a huge inventory they probably don't go over every single instrument with a microscope. Not defending GC in any way since this could easily happen at a mom and pop shop just as easily. In my opinion it's not the fact that a store let one like this slip by, it's how they handle it when the customer comes back, and in this case they seemed to handle it professionally. Think about it, the OP didn't even notice it when he was in the store buying the guitar, so it seems an easiest enough mistake for the salespeople to not notice it as well. And I bet the OP probably spent way more time with the guitar when he was trying it out and playing t when he was deciding if he liked it, compared to any time spent with the guitar by any of the sales people, and he missed the crack initially.

This. It was handled to the customers satisfaction.
I just want to know which one sounded better,...

They both sounded about the same.

I have the D'Addario Nickel Bronze and it sounds fine, more sparkle than thump, but the strings are less than a week old. I just received 5 sets of JP nickels so I'm ready.
