Default The D18 Near Disaster

Recently I had a JJB installed in my new D18. When I went to pick it up my Tech had a look on his face that suggested all was not well. He told me that the installation was fine but while he had taken every precaution to protect the top he had gotten some Super Glue Gel on the top between the bridge and the sound hole.
He said he had done everything he could to remove it and had gotten most of it off but when I looked at it, there was still a significant and very noticeable amount of glue still there in an area covering about 2 X 2 inches. He said he had not slept for two nights worrying about it and I believe him. He then told me if it was an issue, he would do whatever it took to make it right. He suggested I take it to Lays Guitar in Akron with whom he had done business with over the years and he would pay whatever it took to fix it.
Now Lays Guitar is one of the most reputable guitar repair shops in this part of the country and they are Luthiers as well and build high-end custom guitars.
I called Dan Shinn at Lays and he told me to bring it on in. He felt it wouldn't be a problem to make it right and in fact, I could wait on it.
Well, it took Dan about twenty minutes of working his magic to remove every bit of the Super Glue from the top and he charged me $32.00, which my guy will reimburse me for.
My new D18 is new again and my Tech could not believe it was that inexpensive. I highly recommend Lays for any repairs or restoration work you might need. Super nice people and great work!

Glad to hear your recommendation. I have used the same repair guy for many, many years but we just moved to the Akron area and I was trying to figure out which shop I could trust.

I love a story that ends well! Glad for you.

Do you know how Dan at Lays Guitar was able to remove the super glue? Sand and then buff it out or a solvent???

Nice report. I was reading it and feeling like no way could you fix the laquer. But a few sentences later I felt good for you and the two luthiers. Love hearing the old school prices too. Obviously they care about more than just your D-18.

I'm sure we would all like to know how he did that! I had many nicks in my matte finished Epiphone dreadnought guitar repaired, with super glue, and the result was an invisible repair. I don't know how my luthier did that either.

I'm so glad things worked out. And it's always nice to know of good resources. Sounds like your tech is a man of good conscience and integrity, something we can use more of today.

He wet sanded it to a point and then used an extremely fine polish to get the rest. Pretty amazing. You could never tell there was anything there.
