Default I want a recorder for Christmas

I really need to get a recorder, I have so many ideas and really want to be able to put them down on a recording. Would love to have the ability to do some overdubs and might as well throw in some kicking quality as well. SUGGESTIONS? tascam/zoom.............etc. Will mostly be done with an Acoustic, but not limited to a plug in electric. THX

I have a Tascam that was about the same price as a friend's Zoom. The Zoom is quieter and if I were to buy again it would be a Zoom.

No relation to these sellers from our current Classifieds. Neither is the latest, greatest, but both are quality machines, and if they fit your needs you can save some money.
1. Video and Audio - Zoom Q4n - $225

2. Audio Tascam DR-07mkII - $85

I have a Zoom H5 that works well. Though no doubt there are other choices it does what you are seeking and does it well.

That's my fault... that's what I had to edit out. I assumed everybody would figure it out. How 'bout strong, powerful or dynamic?

Maybe Offeringplate will come back with a better suggestion.

Budget is the first question.

Built-in mics or externals is the second.

Need for overdubbing third.

Built-in effects fourth.

A simple recorder with built-in mics, limited external connectivity, no overdubbing, no effects is under $100.

Things go up from there.

There are some effective add-on solutions for various smart phones that are worth considering.

Quick answer would need to consider your budget.

Under $100, Tascam D-05. (Yes, It can do simple overdubs, too.)

$250, Zoom R8. Almost as easy to operate as a old school cassette recorder.

These would be my two recommendations for beginning recordists. You really need to examine what your precise needs are and then read through specifications to match up what you need vs. what you want to pay.

There are specific points about many of your possible choices that could be critical to your purchase decision. Once you think you've made a choice don't forget to check out Youtube for some quick "introduction" videos so you can watch someone actually use what you are intending to purchase.

Zoom R8 is what I started with, and still use. It's a recorder with 2 built in microphones, or you can plug into a couple of devices such as a guitar or mic. It supports a total of 8 channels, so if you want to overdub--say add more instruments/vocals, rhythm tracks, etc...it's really quite flexible. Also has separate buttons for punching in your own drum tracks...really too many features to list.

really want a handheld with built in mics. narrowed down to these:

Tascam dr-22wl,dr-40,dr44

or

zoom H2n or H4n

all of these will fit my needs........... just want to be able to record acoustic tracks with the ability to go back and do some fills and overdubs, edit and so on, nothing real fancy but want to keep under 219 or so

thanks again for responses

I bought my Tascam DP-008EX digital multi-track recorder from theses guys 2 months ago.
Posted from USA to Australia - no problems, perfect.
Listed as 'used' but item is brand new - box was opened in store for a customer to view only.
US$139.99
I'm very happy with it, still learning.

Here is an audio sample from my Zoom H4n:

http://gc-unplugged.com/music/00028EC-OhHolyNight.mp3

Details
Recorded using the onboard mics
Mic placement is about 14 inches directly in front of the 12th fret.
Room is far from sound proof, so close-mic'ing is a must
Post recording, I Normalized using the function built into the H4n
Then brought the WAV file into Audacity on the PC and added reverb
Then exported to MP3 from Audacity

Nothing else was done to the sample so that should give you an idea of the sound quality. And perhaps a more recording-experienced person could produce better results.

Also, please ignore the bad playing.
Gary
