Wow! It was great to wake up to this little gem this morning. JR, the guitar still sounds good, and your little tune is soulful and will be a joy to share with others.

I'm glad you're still playing her. (Is it because I have daughters that I use the feminine for my guitars, or is that how it is for all guitars?) I hope she continues to bring you joy and music.

Thanks for sharing!

Thanks for posting, J.R. I was wondering if the guitar was behaving itself.
Glad to hear you still making music on her.

That's a great story and sound. Sure is some lovely looking redwood. Is there any of it left?

Liked the recent telecaster too!

Simon.

Hey Simon, thanks.
Just that one top from that one board...alas!
However, we do have more redwood, some of it as nice or nicer.

And thanks for the Tele-praise.
Been reading the blog?

Indeed I have! Great finish on that Tele! Now, if you've got some fine Redwoods I'm thinking that would be a good thing to have on my Archtop.

You do like to step out of the mainstream, don't you Simon?
Why not make the back/sides out of walnut, not maple?
I mean as long as we're shaking things up a bit!

You got it Steve! Break out! I'm happy to throw a curveball and see what happens. Walnut instead of Maple... I could, I could! But what I was actually thinking of... was some tasty Mesquite for back and sides. How does that sound?

Default Every bit a Kinnaird...

I've played that guitar and it is every bit a Kinnaird - course that has to do with the top and not Ryan! I AM JUST KIDDING...good job Ryan! Keep up the good work!

Sounds delicious... and a bit hard to carve.
Could go with an arched top and flat back.
I mean, this is gonna be an odd-ball, right?

Hi Steve,

Crazy as it sounds.... Well, OK, You're right to question the approach. To be honest, a large part of me wants an *actual* Gibson L5. Probably a Wes Montgomery model such as: http://www2.gibson.com/products/elec...ontgomery.aspx.

So that would be a proper, grown-up Jazz guitar. No messing, serious expense and a big logo on the top. Big & Lovely.

...But, actually what I'm after is something more akin to the original Charlie Christian era product - so something like: http://www.buffalobrosguitars.com/archtops.html and this does have a Flatback. Then, part of me says, well, don't go vintage - get one made and an archtop with flatback can work as these examples show / explain:

http://guitar-maker.blogspot.co.uk/2...completed.html

http://www.vintageandrare.com/produc...l-Finish-17361

http://www.pacinfo.com/~sholst/archtopjt.htm

I like the Andy Mason approach best of those three (more traditional) but the redwood would give a nice warmer burst of colour (and possibly tone?).

Hey Simon,
Great links, thanks!
Love that old Gibson, and think you'd be happy as a clam with something like that.

Default Congrats!

Big shout of "Well done you!" to Ryan and his lovely wife Anna on the birth of their second daughter on Monday, 6-18. Little Arulai is a sweetheart.
Mom & daughter are doing fine, and Ryan is enjoying some well-deserved time away from the shop.
(Kinda lonely around here, but we're happy for them!)

Steve

Thanks Steve and Paul! I think after getting home from the hospital to a home of three girls some shop time is going to look more attractive.
