Default Headphones

Looking to get a set of fairly nice headphones for recording, but also for daily personal use

Wanted to get some input on which models to look at

Also, been reading on headphone amps as well, would anybody recommend one or is that just overkill?

Just to be clear, I am looking for the closed style HEADphone, not the in ear style or the on ear styoe

Here's a recent thread I posted on the same subject with some good recommendations: http://www.acousticguitarforum.com/f...d.php?t=191916

if your system already has a volume-controlled headphone out, you probably wouldn't need a headphone amp.

as far as headphones go, i use the sony 7506 and sennheiser hd280. both are on the ear, but they do a very good job of limiting leakage, if that is your concern. note that the sony is much more comfortable and you should take that into consideration if you'll be wearing them a long time.

I recommend the AKG K240 headphones. They are accurate, comfortable and comparatively inexpensive.

I've been very happy with my Audio-Technica AT M50's. I've used them for tracking and for checking mixes. My recordings are farily simple but, the AT's are pretty accurate and comfortable.

I agree.....I have a pair and they were a huge step up from the Sennheiser's (HD495) that I was using....got a great deal on them from an Ebay store.....

I highly recommend anything from GRADOS for audiophile headphones. I monitor with them too.... probably not very accurate and they are open so it doesn't isolate sound. But I tried monitoring headphones before and after I get the sound just right for its flat signal I have to re-EQ it when listening with my GRADOS, so what's the point. But maybe I am not the best to take advice on monitoring cause I'm new it this too...

I also tried the HD280 from recommended above. Found they clamped really tightly on my head.... makes it hard to sing freely if you do any singing.

I'd definitely reccomend to go without and see what happens......as long as you have a way to control the volume of the phones, it should be fine.

I don't know if they would be exactly what your looking for but I listen to everything from acoustic instumental stuff, to hair bands, to a little hip hop. These work awesome for everything. I have not had a problem with any type of music.

Lucky me, my wife listened to my Beyerdynamic 770 Pros and wanted them. OKay, so I bought some Sennheiser HD 650's cans form myself. I love them.

I was thinking about getting a pair of those myself. How do the 650s work for reference work?

I tried these at BB too. Very nice. Then I tried the other higher end Dr. Dre models right beside it. Whoa! Did not realize headphones sound that good.

I agree with 2 posts above. If you do a search on reviews on-line you will find that nothing beats the Audio Technica ATH-M50S headphones. Although you can spend 3-4 times more, those have the best reviews anywhere. I love mine.
