Your favorite reverb
Howdy folks,
(forgot to add to the title that this is about digital reverbs in terms of a plug-in) I've been freaking with reverbs over my recordings for a bit the past few days and I found some nice ones. Usually I would drop an ArtsAcoustic Reverb on a master channel to make all my acoustic close-miked instruments (two guitars and one cajon) sound a bit more spacious and sounding as if they were recorded in the same hall/chamber/room. I used AAR because I liked it's sound quite a lot. I'd usually go for a chamber-type preset and crank the wet down to below -16dB or so. Now today I found the Lexicon Chamber reverb to sound very nice. I read in another topic the Lexicon Native reverbs sounded 'denser' - which I think this one really does. I used it in one unofficial arrangement for a particular song (it's never been released, nobody here probably knows it), once to add more space to the original (not-so-great-quality) recording and another one to drive two instruments (my guitars) to the back of the mix a bit. I also found Aether, but I can't quite get along with it yet. On electric guitar recordings I tend to use Waves Rverb and pick the guitar plate preset and set it's wet level really low (10 or lower). Now I would like to ask you guys what your favorite reverb is, what you like about it, what they're good at and what you use it for. Tips on using the reverbs are welcome too. CZ |

Right now when I'm working "in the box" I'm really jazzed with Steinberg's "Roomworks." No big rep or hype but it has a really simple interface that allows me to get what I need really fast. It also occupies a very small memory footprint so I can run many different iterations, tailoring each for the particular application, ie. one for the snare, one for overheads, one for the lead vocal, one for the BGVs, one for the guitar, one for a special effect, etc.

What works best to my ears depends on the particular recording and how much reverb I want to use on a certain song.
For reverbs I have Lexicon Native, Aether, TC PowerCore VSS, Waves Renaissance reverbs, and convolution reverb Pristine Space. I have demoed several others. The last recording I posted on the forum I used the Lexicon and I used Aether on the one before that. Ocassionally I will double up on reverbs used in a song.

Since I bought my Saffire interface, I've been using Focusrite's reverb. The default settings are more of what I'm looking for when I've wanted to add reverb.
However, I'm at a loss as to what the different settings actually do. I've experimented and know what I like and don't like, but I have no idea what I'm doing. I'll start another thread so as not to hijack this one.

I really feel like an old codger, but I still use a Lexicon PCM70 from the early 90s . . . And you know what? It still sounds great.

Classic unit. What settings do you tend to use on it?

Rick, Usually I use Concert Hall and basically I just kind of fiddle with diffusion, pre-delay and room size until I hear what I like . . . The plates and a pre-set called Tiled Room also are very nice . . .

If you look inside almost any reverb unit, it will have a lexicon chip in it.

Plug in wise I'll add a +1 for Waves Renaissance. As far as out board reverbs, I did get a chance last week to listen To the Bricasti M7 which is digital but a complete separate outboard box with its own processor . Whoowee , its pretty nice!!! However it's rather expensive.

I've never gotten far with the Rennaissance verb (Rverb), even less with the TrueVerb (anyone?). Has anybody here tried/used the ArtsAcoustic oone that I seem to like so much? I would like to hear opinions on it (just to see what others think).

Altiverb 6
Aloha Cue,
Howzit in Holland? I use three reverb sources for recording: - Altiverb 6 (recommended by Sdelsolray & he's so right on about that convolution 'verb), - Space Designer reverbs that come with Logic Pro 9 - very good, & - the great reverbs provided by a TC Electronics M-2000 external FX processor. Those choices give me everything I need for live or recorded reverbs. alohachris |

Howdy Chris,
It's cool (cold) in Holland, what about 'over there'? I probably won't be able to check any of 'em out, unfortunately. I have seen a little 'the making of' of Altiverb - which was really awesome with all the impulse response recording and all. Very cool indeed. Edit: Does anybody know how to create impulse responses without fancy programs like Space Designer or Perfect Space?

I guess Ill have to try Altiverb 6 . However As I said after listening to The Bricasti,,,, plugins seem like a poor subsittute I suppose it would be somewhat akin to listening to SPS 1 and Daedalus perhaps Chris can relate.
