As has been noted there are a number of decent, direct plug-in mics. They are definitely a plus for beginners IMO because they save you from learning how to do things with other software.
I use an Apogee mic because I can separate it from my iPad on the same mic stand. For videos I find that being able to separate the mic let's me get the video angle I want but with much improved audio. Of course YMMV.

Default recording w/iphone

I've gotten some very nice results with the iphone and the Apogee mic that plugs directly into the iphone. I think the Apogee goes for 175-200$ if I remember correctly.
