Yes, we do like to talk about gear and not enough about recording technique.
I'd like to add one specific thread: the big mic thread From what I've experienced, you can get good recordings from the most elaborate setups to a USB interface and an SM57. I have even had good results with just a Blue Snowball microphone (reading through this made me want to listen to the track again, and yes, it still holds up).
