New Yamaha FS800 vs Yamaha FG110/150
I recently bought a Yamaha FS800 after buying and returning a vintage Yamaha FG 110 and a 150.
The new FS800 is basically based on the FG100 and 150. The FS800 has a solid top while the vintage ones are all laminate. I find that the FS800 truly outshines the vintage models. More spring spacing, better playablity and just a better overall, crisp sound. For $200 the FS800 is a great deal. If anyone is looking for a new, affordable guitar, I would highly recommend it.

The Yamaha FG/FS series have a lot of fans on here - myself included.

I own a 1971 Japan red label FG-110, I really like the sound, but I have played an FS series Yamaha and found that it sounds just as good and sustains better.

I've been thinking along the same lines. I have an FG-335ii I was thinking of trading for an FG-110 that needs the bridge glued back, but that has no other issues. But the FS-series, for the same money...
I always loved the action on the Yamaha's, and the deeeeeep bass... And, having small hands, they work well. The 110 is a cannon! My 335ii is, as well, but it's big. Perhaps the FS700/800 is indeed, the answer?

The FS800 is a much different beast then the 700 series. The forward scalloped bracing pattern makes a huge difference. I have been playing one in my LGS for a few months and I keep returning to it. OP is right,, but it is a real step up. They out did themselves this time. Easily as nice as any guitar under 1K.

I owned a Red Label FG-150 for a while but ended up selling it. Honestly despite the all laminate construction, many of my friends found it sounded awfully close to a solid wood mahogany Martin. I only sold the Yamaha because it wasn't getting much play time and because it needed a major neck reset.
I have heard great things about the new 800 series. That FS800 with the vintage top stain sure looks a lot like the old 150. Quote:

I have had a few Red Labels FG180 Nippon Gakki and a few FG160 Tan label. To me the FG160 Tan labels sounded better than mf Nippon 180s. Then I got a new FG800 which I think smokes them all. I sold them all except the new 800. I use mine for travel, outside play. Its my beater and for about $150 you cannot beat them.

I got a FS800 today too. Sounds an awful lot like my old FG-150, and looks nearly identical. Very fine sounding guitar and I got it brand new out of the box on sale for $169.
Anyone know what hard shell case will fit it? It won't fit my Gator classical or my tweed classical.

I was looking for a beginner's guitar last few weeks and the FG/FS800 were one of them. Others I tried were the Taylor Big Baby and Sigma. The Big Baby were all sold out so it was down to the Yamaha and Sigma.
Then I tried the LL6, and just had to buy it. The 800 were very good, but the LL6 is really a step up even though it is more than double the price.
