No kidding! I am off Bailey Bridge, so about five minutes from the Newby's Bridge and Qualla trailheads. We love that park.

I live in what is considered the foothills of the Cascade mountain range. When spring comes and turns to summer we get a lot of bikers in training groups. I'm talking up to 30. I not only see a ton of folks trying to true wheels (cuz they eat it all the time on the winding steep hills), but also patching tires.

Hard to beat the looks of a classic road bike to me, and the speed and efficiency is awesome. I always wanted a Cannondale aluminum. But for much of my life, I was too heavy. Now I'm not (around 180, which may be a bit much for old school aluminum), but I also live where trails abound, so why bother?

For frame of reference, I frequented Pocahontas prior to the consolidation of the park and the state forest and the invention of mountain bikes in the late 1970s. Gosh, that makes me feel ancient....

I started riding when the "Mountain Bike Handbook" was a pamphlet... You'd need a Chilton guide to maintain that thing!

Now, you can go online to find the manuals for almost any component. Most of it is pretty simple.

I'm not going to work on the internals of a suspension fork or shock. I've ridden with a guy who has scars in his face to prove that he 1) missed a small detail when putting a fork back together and 2) didn't stop riding when the fork didn't work properly.

Some nice rides here.

At yesterday's digging session I saw what will be some 2018 Trek & Bontrager product getting a tremendous amount of abuse and push to the limit.

Yes, it's certainly a nice stretch to ride with restored tressels and tunnels for some nice scenery. The biggest headache are baby carriages and dogs on long leashes during "peak" times (around lunch time) but this stretch is pretty lightly traveled.

Kinda OT but my wife is finally getting into riding. Like most things though she is concerned about price and I'm trying to steer her away from Craig's List. I told her a decent bike starts at $300 but even showing her some Schwinns going for $200 she balked. She rarely listens to me and it was actually a friend of hers that finally got her to give it a try. What's a decent starter bike for breaking a sweat on limestone coated trails like this?

Default Owl Hollow Titanium

When I broke my Marin Eldridge Grade, I found this Litespeed frame on ebay for $460 and transferred my components over to it.

Maybe full-suspension is somewhere in my future, but this one does it for now.

Love all the steel and ti bikes on this thread! FS is great, but unless you're riding trails that demand it a hardtail is going to be a lot cheaper and less maintenance.

It does soften all the blows as one ages however...
