You'd be guessing the wrong way. I never let instruments get in the way of bending. But I think you may be thinking backwards a bit. A string which is stretched laterally is going to change in proportion to the amount it's bent, not with regard to how wide a fret span is. The length of the scale combined with the weight of a particular string is what produces x-amount of tension. Most multi-scale guitars for average play are well within fairly normal parameters. My particular guitar is short scale on the two treble strings (the scale is 25''-25.75'') so I pull full step bends on it more easily than on a conventional scale guitar. The bass strings do have a bit more tension, but nothing ''obvious'', but remember I down tune it a lot and they bend quite easily. I probably do most of my bends on the 2nd, 4th and 5th strings with only an occasional 1st or 6th string bend, and rarely at all the 3rd (at least no more than a nudge). A well designed fanned fret guitar plays transparently in every regard including the bends... |
