Default Annual miles and the cost of gas

I drive an average of 20,000 miles a year and get 22 miles to the gallon average.

At the old $3 a gallon, I was paying $0.14 per mile. *

Meaningfully , for me, that equates to:
$1.40 fuel cost for each round trip to the grocery.
$5.60 to visit my favorite guitar shop
$9.80 to reach the farthest hosted weekly jam.

Your mileage , literally may vary!!

*excludes maintenance and repairs

My 2016 Honda Accord is rated at 27 city, 37 highway, and 31 combined. From the first 1000 miles, which includes a round trip to LA and back, that's what I'm getting so far. The best highway mileage I ever got with my 2012 Toyota Sienna was 25, and around town averaged 18.

Using Amy's $3.00/gallon, that's about $0.097/mile. So now my gas costs are 30% less. Obviously they are very different vehicles. But as I no longer need the cargo capacity of the van, I'm really enjoying the smaller size and savings.

Also, I only needed to refill once, and that was in LA. The extended range is really nice for convenience, too.

My company reimburses me at a rate of $0.55 a mile. The lower cost ($1.30) around here and the efficiency of my Acura makes that a pretty good deal.

Even for 18 MPG, it's not $.97/mile, it's $.16/mile. That would be super expensive. Think about it... at nearly $1 per mile, if you drove 3 miles, it would be 1 gallon of gas.

I used to drive 35,000 per year, got it as low as around 4000, and now it's up to around 9100.

When I went to a 4 cyl wagon I roughly calculated It was buying the occasional coffee or beer I"ll have at a public place.

The interesting part of driving more is seeing how it's the activities of 3 kids and my volunteer work and not work or errands.

You're right. I left out a 0. It should be $.097/mile for the Accord. Will edit my post.

I just buy gas as needed never calculate mileage. Read something today where gas would need to be at around 20 per gallon to offset the upcharge on an electric car over 4 years.

I have always tended to calculate what it costs me in fuel to drive my car back and forth to different locations. Knowing the numbers makes me more aware of combining trips or not taking them at all and just ordering stuff from Amazon Prime.

My 4-cylinder engine Fusion is averaging 31 mi/gal and gas costs me $1.97 right now. The 40 mile round trip to work every day at $0.064/gal in the Fusion costs me $2.56 every day. Just a 15 mile round trip into town costs me about a dollar.

But in my wife's Mountaineer at 17 mi/gal average, it costs $1.74 to take a trip into town and about $2.50 to get to the local hardware store. The pickup truck gets about the same mileage.

From my house to Costco in Olympia is 57.7 miles or 115.4 miles round trip. In the Mountaineer at 17 miles/gal, that costs $13.39 plus a couple of hours of driving time.

It all adds up. But sometimes you just have to spend the money and forget about it. I would gladly pay whatever it costs to drive back and forth to Seattle to one of the AGF gatherings with a bunch of fellow guitar players. It's almost priceless.

Where did you read that? I know the controller where I work has paid whatever premium for hybrids at first and now what I understand are plug in Fords. Now the fork lift trucks are electric. I see lots of courier vehicles that are electric.

My cousin has a Tesla that's all electric and he hinted it was more than $100,000. Something like that would not be practical for most.

In a newspaper so it could be just something they made up; but for what it's worth:
