Hypothetical Question (will it leave traces?)
Let's say a person did this:
Took home his work laptop Downloaded Reaper Installed M-Audio interface software Recorded an entire project Mixed down project into WAVs Saved original tracks and mixed down WAVs onto portable USB drive (and possibly uploaded them online somewhere). Uninstalled Reaper Uninstalled M-Audio Software Erased any and all WAVs and saved projects Erased all internet history How much of a trace would this leave? (While I really don't want it to, I know that this will turn into an ethical discussion, but I would like everyone to also note that I have THREE Dell laptops locked up in my desk right now. One is sort of old (keyboard doesn't work), one is a netbook with a screen that flips to turn it into a tablet, and the other is a run-of-the-mill Dell. All of these computer sit in my desk for months on end without ever being used. Oh, and I have a BRAND NEW iPad Air and a case that are still in their original boxes from six months ago. I use NONE of these for my work; they are just issued to all employees. I also know that others use their iPads and computers for personal use, but I don't want to get into a "Well, if everyone jumped off a bridge..." thing either.) So, to repeat the question, how much of a trace would this leave? |

There will be left over traces (temp files, log files, registry entries, etc.) Would someone at work with a casual inspection of the computer find them and recognize what they were about? - not likely.

Simple solution (though a bit time consuming) is to run a full backup to an external drive and set a time stamp BEFORE you do anything else. Do what's needed then wipe and restore...
