Default Am I dumb or what? How long would this take you to learn?

I'm into my third week for this song. 1 sticky part and then I'm at performance speed.

I would say three years. First, I would commission a perfect guitar from a well known builder with a waiting list and then I would allow it to break in before attempting the song. Ok. Maybe four years five on the outside.

Ya, i'm pretty sure i'd only get stuck on one part, too.

The part that's 1:26 long.

I'd probably learn it in a similar time-frame to you. The first position passages with alternating bass are tolerably simple - the further up the neck work, less so.

If a tune is too easy, there is a tendency to not learn it thoroughly enough. A challenging piece that has been repeatedly played while learning, over a period of weeks, is more likely to stick in your brain.

That's the "performance" tempo according to Truefire (I have this lesson). I'll finish up and get to this point at least which is not a bad spot to be at.

I had a feeling......

The Truefire "Performance speed" is 96bpm, that youtube sounds like 140ish.

"Ok, I can do it, but that's gonna be another 2 months" Scotty said to Captain Kirk.

It took me about five minutes to play it his way, but I cheated by knowing the tune prior to picking up the guitar to play it. I used to play it on my accordion.

It helps to know the tune first...and you know what they say about speed. It kills...

I would probably never ever have the patience to master that sweet frill at the very end; that's a sweet touch!

This video makes the song look easier than I would have imagined from only listening.

Now I am tempted. I will let you know where I am in three weeks.

As a thought - you could re-arrange the tune around the sticky part ....or not.

Lime house Blues is deceptively simple on the outside but to make it sound good, you have to have every layer spot on (the bass, the melody, the swing, the slurs, the runs). Steve Kaufmann has an interesting lesson on this (20 swing favorites every Parking Lot Picker Should Know (Homespun)). He divides the tune into three versions: beginner, intermediate and advanced, introducing embellishments at each level. Toby Walker is starting to do the same, but Limehouse Blues is not in his lesson set (yet).

I keep going back to Limehouse Blues in hopes that I can get it under my belt, but nowhere near competency.

I already modified it a bit because I couldn't do the pinky stretch to the 7th fret, but I could do different voicings to cut down the movement a bit. Hmm. Anyway I'll put up a progress recording soon just for the fun of it.
