Fender Palomino acoustic?

I have a friend's guitar, an acoustic body, electric looking neck, adjustable rosewood bridge, a long bar from the neck down to the bottom of the guitar and an audio output jack on the side of the guitar. No label inside and nothing special, just Fender "Palomino" on the neck.

Anyone know about this guitar? It is well used, in a dusty case. Just looking for information. I was about to tell my friend it is pretty much worthless, but I'd like to check.

Clark they were popular in the sixties -ive even seen a few of them in those Beach surfing movies of that time- they were a fad , i believe Fender reintroduced them or a guitar that looked like them a few years ago .Ive played a few here and their and they seem very top heavy and over built -i can't give you a price ( I dont have my Acoustic guitar value book close by )
But they are not a great guitar ( in my opinion anyways ) but they are very cool looking Dad-dio !

My dad still has his from over 45 years ago! The sound isn't what it was, but that thing is a joy to play. It has the most incredible action I've ever felt. Something different and cool. I'll try to dig up a pic

I remember those days. There was another model called the Malibu and they came in custom colors just like 60s strats.

Fender was just as successful making acoustics as Martin was making electrics.

That bar that you see was to keep the guitar from folding itself in half, while using a non-traditional electric guitar neck. Designed by Roger Rossmeil (sp??) of Rickenbacker-carved-top-fame I believe. As Mr. Owen points out above, not one of Fender's finest hours...sort of an engineering wonder like the Bass V, the 3-screw-neck attachment or the Starcaster...but from the middle '60's...

Thanks for all the info. Though the thing looked too silly for me to take seriously, the history of the "broomstick" makes this an interesting piece at the very least. It plays OK, sounds OK, shows its age but there are no real problems. Neck angle is easy to set with the bolt on electric neck and the bridge saddle is adjustable for individual string intonation adjustment. I suppose I'll clean it up and tell my friend it has some interesting history and has some value as a playable guitar (guaranteed to generate discussion in jam circles :-)
