Need Help with "You Don't Have to Cry"!
I have no problem with any of the song except the chorus (I play it where "In the morning" starts in "F").
Online tabs and YouTube have the chorus going from "G" to Am, or "G" to D. Neither of those sounds right! For the life of me, I can't figure out what chord DOES sound right! Please help! |

Pretty sure that the original version, on Crosby, Stills and Nash's first record, was done with guitars tuned to DADGAD... plus, there are more than one guitar doing all that stuff! Knowing Stills' penchant for layering, there could be 3 or 4 acoustic guitars playing the thing at the same time...
Point being, if you are translating a tune FROM DADGAD into Standard tuning, there are going to be some chords that will be ambiguous; that is, they'll sound major OR minor... it can be hard to track down the right one, as you've discovered... Very likely that you'll have to find some form of a chord that has just roots and fifths, or in some way fashion a sort-of "modal"-sounding chord in Standard tuning... I would say find one of the options you mentioned that suits you a bit better than the other, and then start messing around with the structure of that chord until you stumble on something that sounds "right" to you...

That one's in double drop D tuning (6th and 1st tuned down to D).
I have the 'In the morning' section going : F (3x321x) C (x3201x) G7 (5x0033) D7 (000210) Hope it helps. |

Another point is they can sing quite complex harmonies. You may not be able to find a chord on the guitar that matches what they sing.

Yes. That drives me bonkers on "Helplessly Hoping." I can never figure out the actual "root" melody on that.
