I used to go see Rocky Athas play live in Dallas all the time back in the 70's. On heck of a nice/friendly guy (always happy to talk with the young guitarists after the gig and show us some of his approach to playing). He is without doubt one of the best non-famous-should-be-famous guitarists around.

If you can get by the hokey video - check out the Lukather solo at 2:15 on Elton John's "Chasing the Crown"....
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=357hAx-H9iU The Joaquin Leivano solo that starts Ponty's "Egocentric Molecules"..... https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3ern1i86OS4 And I've always been partial to the solo here at 3:50 - Alex on "La Villa Strangiato" (this is a live in the studio version) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eK1hmDpa8bo

yngwie has a real economy of motion, he doesn't seem to be working hard at all. he's like the paganini of the electric guitar!
some hot stuff in that video. steve was a bit of a shredder, in his own way. Last edited by mc1; 12-05-2014 at 05:36 PM. |

That was truly delightful, and a breath of fresh air in a thread with more teased hair and 80's shredding than I care to absorb in one sitting

i listened to andy timmons a bit, but that wasn't what i expected. very much in the shreddy category, but really awesome. Quote:
i like all the 80s hair shredding as well. although, like a lot of intense music, i need to absorb it in measured doses. |

most impressed me was his ability to get a plectrum sound from his finger nails. that was remarkable!

Ponty always had good guitarists - Daryl Stuermer, Allan Holdsworth and Leivano had some nice solos!

Even banjoists! I saw JLP a few years ago with Bela Fleck, and Stanley Clarke was on bass. I saw him a LONG time ago with AH and even with Frank Zappa longer ago (okay, JLP was in FZ's band at the time!!!).

I hope Hank Garland qualifies as crazy good around here.
In the pocket playing impresses me as crazy good more than a lot of solo playing or flashy playing. One I keep bookmarked that's really a lesson but Niles is crazy good.

that was great. i'm always amazed and guitarists who can keep up those sorts of tempos. very hard for me.
here is an arch enemy tune, very tight, not so easy: |

My favourite guitarist these days has to be Blake Mills. Truly a virtuoso, but he chooses his notes wisely. And I love the way he mixes in his cuban/mexican/world music influences.
Also, his trick on the second video (cardboard in between strings) is pretty cool. 1 https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wlskErEWuRI 2 https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8g-NIaG47jU |
