Default Got a Mandolin for Christmas

Just getting the chords down and am getting into some tunes. Are there any popular tunes that use the mandolin these days? I can think of a couple but am looking for some fun stuff to play along with as I learn. Thanks.

Congratulations! What kind of mandolin did you get?

When not hanging around here or playing your guitar, why not come and hang out with the mandolin-lovers at Mandolin Cafe, where you will find answers to all your mandolin questions, and will discover that MAS is every bit as bad as GAS:

Me too . Ricks got me hooked on them. I feel fortunate and
found a good teacher and had my first two lessons right before the holidays. The chords are way cool they way they
work and the symetrical way they work for the one four five
is really cool. Gets you up and going really quick. I love
noodling celtic sounding riffs on it. Now if I can get more
patterns down it will be even more fun.

I also got a mandolin for Christmas. It is an inexpensive Johnson electrick/acoustic. Kinda been wanting one for the last few years. We do a lot of original country tunes, so I will be looking at incorporating the mando into a few tunes here and there. I also was suprised how quick I was able to get up and running with the Mando. I guess being experienced with the guitar it is more a matter of just becoming familiar with the instrument. I am already playing 4 or 5 fairly simple tunes. I will always be a guitar player FIRST but the mando is a REALLY KEWL little instrument.

Congrats...Mandos are pretty cool. I had one a while ago, inexpensive of course, and somehow it was destroyed in a recent move. Oh well, I'll replace it eventually.

My two favorite jam along songs with a mandolin are Rod Stewart's "Maggie" and R.E.M.'s "Losing my Religion". Before it broke, I was just learning Toad the Wet Sprocket's "Walk on the Ocean".

Have fun!

Led Zeppelin (Jimmy Page) did some cool stuff with the Mandolin.

Cool, thanks guys. I'm having so much fun with it. It's not an expensive one as it's just gonna be my "aside" from guitar but it's an Epiphone with a pickup. Sounds great especially on the upper 7 frets and real nice plugged into my Genz Benz. It's got a blue finish like the T5 blue and gold hardware. I really like it.

Oh quick question. Do you usually get a srap button put on Mandos or just go with the tie behind the nut??

Must be mandolin year...I got one , too! A little Rogue with a pickup...it sounds ok and plays well and since its been MANY years since I played one I won't embarrass myself by sucking on an expensive instrument...I got plenty of others for that!

It goes according to your own preference. Personally, I tie mine behind the nut.

Is this the Chinese "year of the Mando" or something?
I can't say I got one for Christmas, as I traded a geetar for one back in June or July. But I did trade up to a nice Collings F style for Christmas.
Can't play it, but that has never stopped me before !

As for the strap ? I have tried the nut position and the carved curl on the F like so many use. I prefer the tie it on above the nut myself. It seemed to me that the thing hung very neck heavy when attached to the body of the Mando. And when tied to the nut it just sort of floats there and you don't really have to hold it up at all. Makes for a much better playing position and freedom of the hand for me.

I know what cha mean about the strap , Rick, but to tell
the truth once you get used to it the curl mount is just
fine as your left hand holds the Mando ok once you get
the hang of it . Either way is fine as far as I'm concerned

A lot of guys I have played with in jams just have the strap
hooked over one shoulder and kind of push it away from
the body to get more volume and I think that is how they
got to putting the strap there.

See you Saturday old buddy.

The mandolin is much more versatile than most people give it credit for. In fact, I love to apply traditional bluegrass instrumentation to lots of different kinds of music. I am trying to find a mandolin and fiddle player even as we speak to back up a Southern Gospel quartet for a project coming up after the first of the year. Let your imagination run wild with that thing! The best mandolin players I know of are those who are not limited by tradition, or by what they have heard someone else play.

I got a mando about two years ago and they are indeed a blast, and very easy to make music on for a guitarist. We've incorporated it into some of our duo tunes, including the Stones' "Wild Horses" and Rod Stewart's "Reason to Believe," and the combo of guitar and mando just sounds great together... Enjoy!
