I think that it really depends on the artist. I believe there's as many different stories as to how someone starts in the Christian music industry as there are musicians themselves. According to a record exec. that I communicated with at one time, there are currently about 30,000 artists that are trying to break into the Christian music industry alone. He also told me that the Christian music industry is now a lot more "music industry" than it is "Christian." It works the same way as all other music industries work; if your record doesn't sell, you don't get a new contract, no matter how good, positive, or effective your ministry is in behind your music.
I think that I could talk about this industry for days just due to my own experiences. I don't consider myself an expert, but I've gotten to see and read a lot of stuff about it. If you have a myspace account are are really interested in the industry, do a myspace search for Rob Tate. His blog is really good.
This was my first weekend that I didn't have some sort of musical obligation or other obligation besides church and it was awesome! My wife got to do a lot canning this weekend. We canned some tomatoes in addition to about 15 cans of chow-chow/sweet relish. In addition, I got to see my little girl. AAahhh, what a good life!
