Just added another test
AH4x4 + JAM 150 as a subwoofer (using the sub output of the AH4x4). All frequencies below 120 Hz are managed by the JAM 150 1) AH4x4 with JAM150 as a subwoofer 2) AH4x4 alone (CORRECTION: with sub ouput still with the jack so high pass filtered at 120 Hz) My opinion is that when you play outside, you don't need the extra low-end from the subwoofer. It would be muddy anyway.

Thanks Cuki for the hard work! I like the sound quite a lot more with a sub.. but for playing outside, it's not really practical especially with the weight

Note that I did not unplugged the sub output, I just turned the JAM volume off. So maybe a high-pass filter was on without the sub. If you really want the lows, you could just add a car subwoofer and take another 3 cells battery with you.

Cuki,
You may like to run a compressor in line with the bass output of your Laney. With it, you can tame boomy sounding bass very well. Easiest way to arrive at good settings is to use vocals as your test subject. When its wrong you hear and feel it and when its right, it sounds worlds better. |

1) Either use Aphex Xciter with Big bottom that compress the lows 2) Either use TC Hyper gravity 3) Either increase the low-end tail of my IR The vocals are great in my opinion. Did not post since 1) I have a cough 2) The SM58 does not sound so great 3) The Beta 85a sounds great but needs phantom power ( used a zed 10fx) I have plans for a Electrovoice ND76 that has hotter output (great for the low gain input of the AH4x4) and is more detailed and has more clarity than the SM58. The shop dealer agree to let me borrow the mic but I have a cough... So wait and see. Dannyg1, when you put up the volume, your ear do not hear bass anymore (Fletcher–Munson curves)... Does multiband compression help overide that?

Bass is a weird animal at volume and the best way I know of to tame it is to aux feed a n x-over and punch it +6-8db at the subs lowest comfortable freq. Then compress it hard but with a quick attack, a soft knee and a long release.
It sounds very natural in the house set like this though it scares the house PA gatekeeper a bit. You really don't want to drop a Mic with this setup. |

Correction from previous test!!
Correct comparison this time
1) AH4x4 + JAM 150 as a subwoofer (using the sub output of the AH4x4). All frequencies below 120 Hz are managed by the JAM 150 2) AH4x4 truely alone (no jack on the sub output) As opposite to the previous test the frequencies below 120 Hz are managed by the AH4x4. In the previous one, they were cut as the AH4x4 expected a subwoofer that was turned off. The benefit of the subwoofer is not obvious. Actually I think the soundcloud compression cuts the low too. It's barely noticeable, you can hear it on the original file, but it's subtle. (The baby noise are from the next room, no baby was harmed or exposed to high SPL in this sample) That little beast does the job! (I may repeat myself)

Great update Cuki! The waveforms look really similar too compared to the previous 120hz cut. Now I feel a lot better about my purchase hahaha!

Kustom has the PA40 battery powered with blue tooth , I've got the non battery PA50 and it's very good considering it's $99 the PA40 is $199 haven't tried it but if it sounds like the PA50 it's a winner. If you need more volume you could link two together
Harbinger and Alto has similar units Sent from my Moto G Play using Tapatalk |

Hi everyone,
Here is a comparison with vocals. Of course the AH4x4 can't beat an amp that is 2.5 times more expansive but it's doing well and is much lighter. Bye Bye the inverter and external battery. Note that in the experiment the AH4x4 is on battery, with all pots set to 5, volume to 6. The JAM150 has all its pots to 5. Everything is recorded through a Zoom H2 few meters away. Sorry for the poor playing and singing... To conclude, in my opinion, if sound quality is a must: JAM 150 and an inverter + battery sounds best. But it is heavy. If you just want a cheap, portable, good sounding, battery operated amp for singing, AH4x4 is clearly a good candidate. Cuki
