Recording hand drums?
What type of mic and position would be best for djembe, bodhran, or conga? Some of these have fairly deep bass. LDC or SDC or something else? Any tips on mixing and recording?

I'd use an LDC and go with listening position (out front by a couple of feet) if you have a decent room.

An LDC is surely the way to go but to really dial in a good bodhran sound, I find I need quite a bit of eq-ing (both subtractive and sweetening), a good amount of squashing from the compressor, and the thing that really worked magic on the sound was a plugin from Eventide called Fission which allowed me to bring up the transients and push down the tonal sound of the drum.

I approach each of those slightly differently:
Conga - typically a stereo pair...XY config. Typically KM184s Bodhran - 2 LDCs one on each side of the skin, but about level with the player's head height. One gets more tone the other more of the "whack" of the mallet. Typically AT4050s Djembe - 1 LDC close up to the head another pulled back and lower to get body tone. Typically AT4050s...though I sometimes use a KM184 as the close mic to get more "thwaaak". Depends on how present the track is going to be in the mix. The addition of a room mic is not uncommon in all these cases. A little trick I learned in the New York studios - feed your reverb from the room mic & not the close mics. Makes for a more natural reverb.
