Default Americans ... Have You Seen Australian Football?

Just wondering if any of you USA folk have ever seen Australian football? Not Rugby but the game called `Australian Rules`. No padding - No helmets - lots of kicking the ball, marking (catching), running, bouncing, passing. 4 big white goal posts.

My wife and I are Canadian, and in 2006 I was on a business trip to San Francisco, my wife along with me. After business was done, we headed to the Napa Valley where we happened to walk into a bar that was packed with people there to watch, many wearing team sweaters...you got it...Australian rules football! We were rather stunned to witness the awareness and interest by those in the bar in such a part of the world. We watched, it was very enjoyable. That was the first time I/we had ever seen Australian rules football...and unfortunately, haven't seen it since.

I have seen it played on occasion Bruce, but it would never fly here in America. We are a bunch of wussies here who have completely ruined our own game of football with all this "concussion phobia." Pretty soon the NFL will be handing out a spray of roses after a touch down instead of 6 points. We have become so risk aversive here in America that we are virtually afraid of our own shadows now.

I've seen it and liked it quite a bit. If they carried it in the US I would be a regular viewer.

I played on a club team in Seattle in the late '90's, the "Geelong Football Club of Seattle". We took third in the Nationals one year in Cincinnati.

Great, wide-open, physical game which requires a lot from the player. Love it.

I think it's rare and over emphasized by certain elements of society who think football is too violent and because THEY don't like it, they don't want ME to watch it.

I was working in Sydney back in 1989, and I was there for the championship game. We watched it on TV. We did not know much about the game, or the teams involved, but we really got into it as it went on. It was a VERY exciting game. Not just this particular game, but the "game" itself. Towards the end we were yelling and screaming at the TV along with all the other fans. Makes american football seem like "baseball". LOL

I've seen it, and my impression was, "Wow, that's some really white gloves on that ref! Looks like he's pulling invisible guns out of holsters. Was that a goal?"

The rest of it made little sense to me, much like cricket.

Sorry, if I've offended anyone, but sports, in general, are much more interesting to play, than to watch...
