Default Gibson Necks Gloss : Martins Not Glossed

GibbyPrague response in another thread got me thinking, I think it was with the Gibson Songwriter gloss necks.

Heck, if anyone can give me an example of a Gibson satin neck, I'd like to hear about it.

All my Gibson necks are gloss and that's one of my major complaints regarding Gibson.

All my Martins have satin necks (or at least i think they do) and i love working in that gloss neck with my own hands.

Why does Gibsons only have gloss necks and Martin satin necks ?

Okay, another blanket statement but please supply any anomalies to this assumption.

Thanks guys for responding and discussion

Martin didn't start making "satin" necks until the 1980's... and I still hate them (the necks, that is). I guess that makes me an "old fogey" and a traditionalist... so be it.

ZabDart, thank you for your response and opinion.

I grew up on a glossy Gibson Dove neck.

Didn't bother me cuz i didn't know satin was an option.

Actually, didn't really notice until I got a D21 Special with a very obvious satin neck, which i really fell in love with.

Granted, I do have a glossy neck on a Martin custom D28 red spruce guitar that's just fine and dandy.

I guess I've just loved to bring up the D21 Special as a youngster with a satin neck to the gloss that it currently has.

I mean, it doesn't stay satin forever, right ZabDart ?

So, your only inconvenienced for a short period of time ?

I once was thinking to make the neck satin again, but I've totally thrown that thought out of my mind.

If its not a sticky glossy then its good.

But the thing is, some of the Gibson glossies do tend toward sticky.

I wonder why ?

Yes, they do stay satin forever... and I find that finish uncomfortable.
And glossy necks don't stay sticky if you rub them down with a rag between songs. It amazes me how many people are even lazier than I am.

Hey ZabDart, I'm gonna have to disagree with you on both accounts there.

From my experience, the satin necks of the Martin become glossified with lots of play.

Maybe your experiencing something from the Martin satin necks that I don't.

And then maybe I am experiencing something with the Gibson gloss necks that your are not.

Its not that I don't wipe the Gibsons down.

Its just sometimes my body chemistry makes the Gibson gloss necks feel sticky. Other times, they don't feel sticky.

Maybe its the beer i'm drinkin'

Neck feel is TOTAL preference but it seems like you and me are on opposite ends of the spectrum.

Thanks for your experience though, it is informative,

No doubt, the satin becomes gloss w/in a few weeks of playing. My '04 d28ge looks like it was factory glossed at this point.

I like the glossy necks as well.

I lightly shined the neck on my OM-21 Special and it is now perfect.

On a hot day, Gibson necks really need to be rubbed down -- but once lightly used I don't find their necks to be stickier than others.

I can't abide glossy nitro necks. Ticky tacky fly paper things they are. The absolute very worst are Guild necks. I caught a mouse with the last one I had. Poor guy was stuck like a Batman bad guy.

(just providing some balance)

That guy is hilarious.

Don't do this on nitro finished necks because you're not supposed to be playing fast on vintage guitars... LOL

Why is it as EPaul states.

Do they put extra lacquer on those necks that have a tendency to get sticky ?

I'm wiping my Gibson necks quite frequently with a micro fiber cloth which does help.

But on some days its sticky sticky sticky, and with ALL my Gibsons, there ain't no exceptions.

I'm thinkin' it might have something to do with body chemistry but its weird that my Martins NEVER have that problem.

I'm thinkin' the Martins don't have the problem cuz I was the one giving them the gloss.

Whereas, the Gibsons came factory made with gloss that's incompatible with my body chemistry ?

Thoughts ? Opinions ?

"Most" higher end Martins have gloss necks, not all.

I actually prefer satin, but it's not a deal breaker, primarily the less expensive Martins come with satin finish necks.
