IPOD questions: Recording, etc...

I am looking at IPODS for recording,(because I need my music anyway) just a simple thing to catch those easily forgotten melodies, etc..., Are they any good for this, you can get external mics for them, ala cheapies, but thats ok...


AND a decent speaker doc, if anyone knows about them.

What is up with 4 gen, 5th gen, 6th gen, not sure if you have to buy into another program for the newer ones?
