To Cue Zephyr: If you like theory so much, this is a no-brainer. Learn the scales and modes and theory behind the music and do it right from day one. If you want to just strum around the campfire, theory isn't necessary. If you want to be good, take lessons and learn them. It's fascinating stuff. Good luck.

Only if you want to be a musician.

You would do well to practice mainly (or only) major scales. They are key to understanding western music. Pentatonics give you something to noodle with, but if you like theory and want to know what you are playing and why it works, they aren't going to do much for you.
