Pisgah 12" Walnut Tubaphone 5-String Open-Back Banjo
Hi Folks, a while back I solicited information on AGF about various brands of 5-string open-back banjos as I was thinking of getting one. After sifting through the suggestions, I settled on commissioning a banjo from Patrick Heavner at Pisgah Banjo Company in Asheville, North Carolina. I received my banjo a couple of weeks ago and love its tone, feel and build quality. I opted for my banjo to be crafted with a 12-inch Walnut Rim with a Tubaphone Tone Ring, a Walnut Neck with a Persimmon Scooped Fingerboard, a HawkTail Tailpiece and Traditional Wire Armrest. The company photos show my banjo prior to shipping at which time I requested Patrick add a railroad spike at the 10th fret, so 7th, 9th and 10th frets are spiked. I highly recommend Pisgah Banjos as an easy to deal with, high-quality banjo company with reasonable pricing.

Wise choice.
For those unfamiliar, here's a recent podcast of Patrick being interviewed that features a few tunes interspersed with talk about Pisgah Banjos. http://www.camerondewhitt.com/getupinthecool/ |

I'm not a banjo player but do have gas for a nice open back. That's a pretty sweet looking instrument, the walnut looks awesome.

I have Pisgah Appalachian. Not much of a banjo player, but it beats anything near the price. Made in America with some cool woods and has a really nice sound, finger or flat picked. I'm definitely not a Scruggs style player.
Your looks very nice. |

Folks, thanks for your nice comments! It took about 5 weeks from order placement to reception of my banjo. I contacted Patrick Heavner a few times during construction with some changes I wanted done to my initial order configuration and he was always accommodating and friendly. A great guy and a great company to deal with!

When I learn to play the thing Now repeat the chorus here we go-o-o-o We're comin' from the mountains Crossin' o'er the plains It's off to California Then back again to Maine Singing a song that you all know So let your voices go We'll sing it out my brothers Wherever we may go-o-o-o-o-o-o I'll see what I can do but it may be painful!

That banjo is fantastic and I am happy to see you went with Pisgah. They seem like good guys and I love their use of local woods. Absolutely beautiful.

Another Pisgah owner here and loving it. I recently had the opportunity to play a couple of other banjos and have to say that my 12" pot Pisgah Woodchuck is still my choice without hesitation. Enjoy yours!

Thanks, Folks, for the nice comments on the Pisgah! The more I play it, and the better I'm trying to get, the better I dig it!

I'm still loving my Pisgah 12" Walnut Tubaphone as my Deering Sierra, all 11 lbs of it, sits idly by in its case awaiting some attention!
