I owned the SJ and mahogany 000 Walker guitars Al is playing in those videos at different times in the past 7-8 years. They were both great examples of Kim's work, but they were just not quite right for me at the time when I owned them... the SJ was simply too big of a guitar for me to really get comfortable with playing and the 000 was too traditional at a time when I was all about more of a modern tone. Had I been where I am today with tone, the 000 would still be by my side. The OM I have now from Kim (Adi/Flamed mahogany) is a great guitar that really suits my playing style and has a tone that really like... traditional but not overly dry, responsive but does not lack headroom and plenty of bottom end without being boomy in the least. It seems to combine the best tonal attributes of the SJ and 000 in a very comfortable package.

Wow...a 7 - 8 year backlog, per his web site. Must be nice to be in such demand. I haven't had the pleasure of playing one of these, but this thread makes me want to, yet afraid to at the same time.

I'll add to this thread 10 months later. That EIR/Adi Walker 000 was just incredible, everything the original poster says and more. I came within inches of buying it. I've never heard tones like that. I can't describe it other than that the guitar took me somewhere I'd never been before sonically. And ditto what the OP says about Mike Joyce at Luthiers Collection. That guy is a gem, the opposite of the stereotypical "dealer"-- just so relaxed, warm and genuine, a true gentleman and very knowledgeable to boot.

You may regret that decision not to pull the trigger on the 000, I spoke to Mandolin Brothers, because they get a few guitars from Kim a year, out of curiosity to see if there was a way to be on the list. They say they aren't getting anymore guitars and Kim may retire. Anyone else hear this? Maybe just a rumor? |

Kim intimated to me in February that he may be closing his list to allow him to retire. So what you've heard is probably true. I sneaked back on the list beforehand though!

I've never played a guitar from Kim Walker -- but like all famous builders his guitars are exquisitely beautiful. That traditional headstock with a floral inlay is arguably the prettiest of its kind IMHO.
This thread is giving me GAS again. I couldn't order just one though -- it would have to be a pair. And I'd be in my mid forties by the time the guitars are built... Sigh... |

Joe, some of us are already in our mid-forties--and beyond!

I'm sure there's nothing wrong with it, Richard -- but still I'm not looking forward to it!

Still haven't played one of these. Sounds like the chance to do so will decline? Cheers, Steve |

No choice there, but you can choose to turn forty-five with a new Kim Walker on its way by UPS. Believe me, that can improve things immensely! |

Please post pics Bluemonk
His guitars are extraordinary, love looking at them. Why isn't there more pictures of his work online?? Even his website is scarce. |
