Home Recording setup opinions please ?
Im new to this and have been happy with my Blue Yeti USB mic. Thing is I want more channels etc.
I am not a pro. I just record songs, fingerstyle, as well as electric work. Heres things I already have Computer: MacBook Pro 2014 Software: Garageband, I plan to keep using this unless I try reaper or other software Headphones: Im a prior headphone junky so I have a Beyerdynamic Dt880, Hifiman HE-400, Fostex Modded T50rps, Sennheiser Amperiors, Grado Sr80. So far the Beyerdynamic dt880s are working great but the amp in the Blue Yeti is not powerful enough I have to crank the volume Mic: Blue Yeti USB This is what I am conisdering: Mic: CAD MX179 and either GLS-Es57 (sm57 clone) or MCA-SP1 DI: Scarlett 2i2 Monitors: This is where im tossed up. I dont want to spend beacoup bucks on this. I use Yamaha HS8's in my living room but wanted small monitors for my desk. Any opinions under 200 USd ? Any thoughts or opinions. This should be good enough for a home user ? Any opinions would be valued. Thanks |

Monitors, Presonus Eris 5. They are in your price range, sound quite good given their size, and the cabinets are small enough to work in a desktop setting. You can see what they look like on my "Simple Homestyle Recording" page:
http://www.bluestemstrings.com/pageRecording1.html Anything smaller than 5" isn't worth the effort IMHO. |

I've got the JBL LSR305 monitors - with a price match at GC I got the pair for $225. They have a rear bass port, so you need trapping behind them (which I had already).
I might suggest spending the few extra bucks for the Scarlett 2i4, it has a few more features that might use at some point.

I have a Scarlett 6i6, and while it has more features than the 2i2 you are looking at I assume it uses the same preamps. I'm well satisfied with mine.
I use 5" monitors, and I like that size for acoustic guitar work. I happen to have Equator D5's, but they are over your budget. I've used the Event TR5 in the past and liked that monitor (often available used in your budget). I tried the Alesis M1 Active Mk2 (7") and did not like the low end; did not seem articulate enough for my taste. I'm not familiar with the mics you are looking at. I used to have an Oktave MC-012 which was a nice sdc mic (often available used). I now have a pair of ADK A6 mdc mics (single mic only can be purchased new as low as $169), and a pair of 3 Zigma CHI sdc mics.

Musicians Friend had them on sale online for that, I went to GC (owned by same place, of course), and they price-matched - basically one at regular price, one at 50% off.

update, that hurt the wallet.
decided to just use my hs8 to mix with and put that in my little bedroom "studio". Replaced it with some M-audio av40 we just use it to watch movies anyways. ended up going with the Scarlett 2i2 1 x CAD M179 1 x Rode NT1a plus the various accessories. This should be a ok starter setup im guessing. |
