Definately keep an eye out for a good used instrument. I bought my Guild D25-12 for $350. It was made in Westerly, RI and is a cannon.

Craigslist can be a goldmine if you're careful and know what to look for.

There’s a reason the #1 selling 12 string guitar is made by Taylor. My 454ce is out of your price range but it rarely needs to be retuned and you can play way up the neck. There are always pre-owned Taylor 12 strings available. Take your time and you’ll find a great one.

You'll be surprised at just how many songs WORK on a 12 that you never would have expected would sound good. I've found very few that I can't make work excellently on one of my 12s (which seem to get the lions share of play these days!)

Best of luck with your decision!

Taylor has an easily adjustable neck and low action right out of the box.
Overtime the neck adjustability is even more important on a 12 string due to increased string tension.

If you are looking at used, you might want to check out the used 12 strings on the GC website. You should be able to find a good one there in your budget and a good acoustic amp as well.

Yes, it's a great guitar plays easily and holds tune extremely well. Reviews on this model are very positive. I just got mine a month ago it's my first 12 string and I'm very happy.

any recommendations for a nice sounding/playing 12 string for under 500$

i am torn between buying a cheap 12 string or fishman loudbox mini as my next purchase...

thanks for the help
I'm tempted to say buy the Loudbox and use its chorus effect...but I won't.

I've noticed people have varying views and are extremely 'picky' of what their ideal 12 string should sound like. E.g warm and lush, bright and chimey, deep and orchestral, a 'jangly' version of their 6 string, etc. Hence you should have a 'sound' in your head or point to a player who has the sound you're looking for. Then ask for assistance on how to get that sound on a budget.

If you don't know what you like, then audition as many guitars as you can get your hands on. At the end of that exercise, you'll develop a preference...and maybe even break your budget and purchase an expensive guitar.

Buy cheap, buy TWICE...

LWSog, you're right on it. the Seagull 12-string is an astonishingly good instrrument for way under $500 used. Stays in tune, sounds good every time I break it out. And the Loudbox Mini is the best sounding little acoustic amp. Shop with a little care, OP, and you should be able to get the pair for under $500. I did and have been quite happy with both.

I also own a Fishman Loudbox mini which is a cool little amp. Both of these are a lot of equipment for the money.

I have two very good 12 strings.
But I have also played both the Taylor 150e and the Martin DX121AE. I thought the Martin played as easily as the Taylor, and that it sounded better. Quite good actually.
